Pacafi selections for members of the Pacafi Club – 24th March 2014.
Take The Crown 4.00 Towcester had been well held in two previous handicap runs but last time out at Chepstow was backed to win. It appeared that he appreciated a return to fast ground and travelled well just behind the leaders before forging clear to record his first win. He could get hit with a big rise in his mark, but the style of this victory was impressive and this unexposed five-year-old is open to lots more progress on better ground

Gamble landed

Trainer Henry Oliver has taken the opportunity to bring him back quickly before being reassessed and follow up Thursday’s win. On his previous six races under rules he had not made the frame so his win looked good planning.

Take The Crown

Not sure about ground but has clearly come to hand

The Chepstow win was in a Class 5 handicap on good ground and today he races in the same grade but on good to soft. After the race trainer Henry Oliver told us: “The ground was too heavy for him last time and he didn’t get home at Wincanton. He needs good or quicker and if conditions are right he’ll run at Towcester on Monday.” Not sure what he meant by quicker than good given recent weather but today he gets good to soft and we imagine that will be all right. Also we are not convinced the horse needs summer ground to win, more that he is ready now and has come to himself. Besides, it is hard to imagine that the Chepstow ground was on the fast side of good and his sire Fair Mix won on all sorts of ground.

Today's race does not look much stronger...

Today’s race does not look much stronger than the Chepstow one. Clearly Take The Crown won with plenty in hand and after gaining confidence is entitled to come on again given his light racing record. We are encouraged further with the jockey booking. Denis O’Regan is one of our favourite jockeys and he has ridden two winners from a few rides for the trainer. The trainer does not have many runners so hard to gauge statistics and is yet to have a winner at Towcester from five runners. McCoy's presence in the race on the second favourite ensured we got odds against our selection instead of odds on. One imagines his mount will be heavily backed with the each-way punters.

The Racing Horse had hoped to get involved with Blue Buttons 2.50 Taunton (see Saturday's Pacafi page) but 2/7 with Bet365 is too short for us and we will watch her win...
