Chepstow 3

The Racing Horse is looking forward to the seasonal return of Sire De Grugy at Chepstow on Sunday as long as the ground is soft. The weather forecast is for rain Monday and Tuesday but we will update ground conditions for the Totepool Chepstow Jumps Festival on Friday night after the Preview Evening at the course. We will be receiving the very latest information about Sire De Grugy from the trainer Gary Moore at the course on the day.

Chepstow Races Sire De Grugy

Ground permitting Sire De Grugy will go for his third win at Chepstow

Last season was an awful one for the Preston Family & Friends Ltd but the 9yo My Risk gelding did win at Chepstow for the second time in February on his second race back last year (had unseated rider at Newbury on his reappearance). Giving upwards of 20lb to his three rivals he produced a polished display when jumping fluently. After the race Jamie Moore told us: "They went a proper gallop trying to stretch us. It was a very impressive performance from Sire De Grugy. He was jumping so well. Halfway up the home straight I was buzzing because he was giving me such a wonderful feel. He´s right back where he was at this time last year. He was a little tired after the last fence, but that was because of the big weight." The win made in number 15 from 27 runs and 11 of those had the word soft in going title, meaning he was won 4 on good ground.

Gary Moore upbeat about his star chaser!

Both trainer and son have been upbeat in recent days. Gary told us: "Sire De Grugy seems in great form and looks as good as ever. He's actually carrying more condition this year than he's ever done before and is about 10 or 15 kilos heavier than usual. Whether he's just doing better or if it's middle-aged spread, I'm not so sure! He may strip a bit lighter in the coming weeks, but one thing for sure is he's definitely bigger now than he's ever been. The plan at this stage is to run him at Chepstow on Sunday over 2m 3f in the John Ayres Memorial Handicap Chase as long as the ground is good to soft or softer. They do say there is rain coming in at the end of next week so that looks our most likely starting point."

Soft ground is important to him - Gary Moore

He continued: "The soft ground is just so important to him and his work is so much better when there is rain about. His schooling has been fantastic which is important because it was his jumping that let him down last year. He came back really sore from Aintree last spring, but he's had plenty of physio and seems A1 now. We were always playing catch up last season and this time around we've had no hold-ups or anything like that. If he doesn't go to Chepstow, we've got the option of the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter in the first week of November, or even a race like the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham - we'll just keep a close eye on the weather."

The Racing Horse is a huge fan of the horse and would love to meet him in the winner's enclosure on Sunday. Stablemate Traffic Fluide, third in a Grade One at Aintree, will run in either the same Chepstow race or the Haldon Gold Cup but the two will be kept apart.
