The Hereford & Borders Harness Racing Club open their season at Home Farm, Allensmore on Sunday 19th June 2016. This represents the first of a ‘Sunday Quaternate’ and we urge our readers to pencil in the 10th & 17th July and the 14th August into their diaries. The Racing Horse intends to cover all four meetings this year giving a preview of what to expect and then a review on the following Monday.

Those who come to Allensmore will receive a warm welcome. The fantastic stewardship of the course and meetings manage to create its own unique and special atmosphere. The H&B HRC provide racing that is affordable and enjoyable to everyone, whether competitor or spectator.

Early indications suggest that Home Farm has attracted a stack of runners and have framed 9 races around them, these start at 2pm. Before that we have 29 qualifiers and these will probably be split into 4 or 5 heats and start at 1pm. The races proper include:

Dylan Lloyd Jones brings an interesting newcomer to Allensmore

Speaking to Dylan Lloyd Jones last week at Monmouth he said that apart from bringing Mattriach (pictured) and Ffaro to the races he is also bringing a couple of interesting newcomers to Allensmore. One is to experience the trip and the other is a 3yo bay filly Artemis who is a full sister to Mattriarch. She runs in the first qualifier which looks particularly interesting and Dylan will hope Artemis shows similar characteristics and ability to her sister. In this same qualifier Stella's Tantalizing is re-qualifying and will be driven by Martin Roberts and it will be great to see her back on the track racing. Trainer John Wright will pace Immortal Silk who is sired by the same horse as Tantalizing and promising youngster Joel Richards will gather more experience with a spin behind Wellfield Picasso.

Afan Mona Liza out for a quick double!

Typically with an Allensmore meeting there is interest throughout the card. The first race is the Members Race and sees Mattriarch's bid to continue her ascent through the grades whilst last weeks Monmouth 3yo winner Afan Mona Lisa runs in the first division of the Novice (Race 4). After her fabulous win at Monmouth Jess Dyer will be pumped up and hoping for a good drive with Ynyston Onamission in the Martin Roberts Maiden Division 2. He finished second last week at Monmouth beaten by Ffaro. We are not sure if Jess keeps the drive on Afan Mona Liza in the Novice Division 1.

Coming back to form

The Racing Horse duly noted that Hilltop Mildred ran well at Monmouth last Saturday suggesting she is close to a win. The 5yo mare runs in the Wesley Jones & Jackie Maguire Maiden Mile Division 1 and will be driven by Michael O'Mahony. Another horse that ran well was Temujin. It was good to see him finish his race strongly at Monmouth last week suggesting he has recovered from his heavy fall at Presteigne in May

Coalford Tetrick expected to get back to winning ways

Race 9 and the Jim Lawrence Pace looks intriguing and has some very good horses racing in it. Beacon Spellbound loves to stack them up and lead, she will do so again at least for a while as she is the only one drawn on gate. The better horses will have something to aim at but the 4yo Coalford Tetrick (off 70yds) and driver Mark Pritchard is expected to pick them up in the final straight. It all looks very exciting and The Racing Horse will be there to cover the meeting. Please look out for our review on Monday.

Entrance to the course is on the side of the A465 Hereford to Abergavenny Road. There will be a bar and refreshments with bookmakers in attendance. The cost is £8 per person but the under 14's and car parking is FREE.

WELCOME to the first of (hopefully) 4 meetings under BHRC rules planned for the Lawrence family’s wonderful circuit here at Allensmore. If you are new to the sport of harness racing and would like to know more about the technical stuff, please don’t be afraid to ask – we love our horses and what we do. Most harness racing people can chat to Olympic Standard!

We hope that EVERYONE enjoys The Allensmore Experience – but there are many valued supporters working hard behind the scenes to whom we are eternally grateful. STARS - every one! Behind every fixture is a team of stressed and exhausted persons! This is Hereford & Border HRC ‘s 22nd year of running racing at Allensmore, so no wonder some of them are tired!

As usual, the bar and caterers share our opinion that a day out should not ‘break the bank’, so please don’t be afraid to sample their wares. Please enjoy your day – we intend to! We hope to see you again on July 10th & 17th, and August 14th.
