Wales are preparing for the biggest game in their history when they play Portugal in Lyon tonight for a place in the final of Euro 2016. The side has enjoyed a memorable run to reach their first semi-final at their only major tournament since 1958 (Portugal are preparing for their seventh major semi-final and fourth in the last five Euros. It would be too simplistic to say the performances of Wales were based on team spirit and team morale - the victory over Belgium dispelled that notion so how has this happened? Clearly there are reasons for the massive improvement from such a low base post the Gary Speed appointment. Below was a piece written for Betfair in December 2010 and contains some relevance in regard to the journey of Welsh Football. |
The death of Gary Speed shook us all. We were both sport writers for Betfair, here was my take:The response to the appointment of Gary Speed as the new Wales manager up and down the country has been a mixed one though his credentials as a player and a professional stand out. But just like his predecessors, he's got his work cut out...Welsh football, and the national team in particular, has low expectation levels and little pressure to succeed. Even allowing for the lack of resources, it is embarrassing that they are currently ranked 112th (below the likes of Jordan, Togo and Syria). This complacency serves to fuel self-fulfilling prophecies so when former Betfair columnist Gary Speed was confirmed as the new manager of Wales, it was greeted with muted optimism. His basic wage will be around £200,000 a year, significantly less than his salary at Sheffield United and a fraction of what many international managers earn. In a national vote when asked if Gary Speed was the man to take Wales forward the results were: |
YES, without a doubt: 4% YES, hopefully: 31% NO, he doesn't have enough experience: 39% NO, he's not the man for us: 23% Don't knows: 3%
