Like most years the Bunbury Cup Heritage Handicap over 7f is very tough to analyse given it is one of the most competitive handicaps of the year. We need help to decipher this large field for this long-established handicap and there are several key trends to note. For example 10 of the last 14 winners carried 9st 3lbs or less whilst 13 of the last 14 winners had raced 3 or more that season. Horses aged 4 or 5 have the best recent records and 10 of the last 14 winners returned in double figures. Apart from the trends we need our ratings for help:

5.10 Newmarket: Bet365 Bunbury Cup Heritage Handicap 7f Class 2

14/14: Won over 7f previously
13/14: Raced 3 or more times that season
10/14: Carried 9st 3lbs or less in weight
10/14: Returned a double-figure price in the market
  9/14: Aged 4 or 5yo
9/14: Returned between 10/1 and 16/1 in the betting
8/14: Raced at Royal Ascot last time out
7/14: Winners from stall 15 or higher
6/14: Placed in their last race
  3/14: Favourites
  3/14: Trained by Richard Fahey

The average winning SP in the last 10 runnings is 11.5/1
Heaven’s Guest won the race in 2014

100 Buckstay at 6/1 (general)
 99 Growl at 8/1 (general)
98 Glory Awaits at 12/1 (general)
 97 Heaven's Guest at 10/1 (Bet365 and William Hill)
97 Flash Fire at 14/1 (Bet365 and William Hill)

With conditions to suit Buckstay should run a really big race with the ever-improving George Wood claiming a valuable 7lb. Flash Fire won the Victoria Cup beating Buckstay by a length but needs to put behind him whatever went wrong when last of 26 in the Wokingham, whilst Heaven's Guest looks to have been prepared specifically for this race in which he was successful two years ago. There was much more encouragement in his second at York last time out. Growl was a 15/2 winner at Windsor over 6f (soft) on his latest outing last month, beating Rio Ronaldo by 2l but carries a 6lb penalty today for that success. Glory Awaits remains well treated on peak form, including Listed/Group wins in 2014.
