Allensmore July 2016

DOUBLES FOR TEAM CONNORS & COLIN

BEVAN!

Allensmore enjoyed perfect racing weather

Once again Pam and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at our favourite 'harness racing track' and thank heavens the weather was perfect for racing. As always the organisers assembled a competitive and varied 8-race card and there was much to enjoy. There was also four qualifiers of interest and an Allensmore Junior Driver Pony Parade where Dylan Connors and Theo Price displayed their skills.

Evenwood Tinkerman

Wellfield Picaso

Team Connors record win double

There were two doubles for connections yesterday. The Connors team recorded the first double and at one stage it looked like a fabulous treble. Evenwood Tinkerman was ably driven by Jerremiah Connors Jnr finding a rail path before powering into the lead, it then looked straightforward but he had to fend off a gallant Wellfield Picaso and Joel Richards to win the Alan Plant Memorial C Class Drivers Pace in a fast time of 2.08. The pair were miles clear of the third place though the official margin was 10l. The winner was to advertise his well-being when rearing and unshipping Jerremiah parading in front of the stewards before racing in the Nick Powell Grade 1 to 3. He led the race close to the business end before breaking thus sacrificing his chance but he is clearly a pacer in fantastic form at the moment.

Trevor Connors was to follow up in the very next race taking the Happy Birthday Cailan Morris Novice Pace with Lakeview Romeo in 2.11.3

Colin Bevan

Buckland Fox Trot clocks a very fast 2.05 dead!

He left it late in the day but driving honours went to Colin Bevan for a masterly win double in the penultimate (seventh) and last race (eighth) on the card. Masquerade Avenue won the Nick Powell Grade 1 to 3 by 2l in a time of 2.08.7 from Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Woodstone Jingo who both charged home from the back. Following up in the last race Buckland Fox Trot did not see a rival in the Jim Lawrence Grade 3 confirming the Bevan win double. This last race had a competitive look before the race and from the off it looked fast, this was confirmed by the clock in a time of 2.05 dead - the winning margin of 4l and a neck upgraded the win further!

mic

Good race calling at harness racing meetings is not guaranteed!

At harness racing meets generally we are not guaranteed good race calling - in fact it is a surprise and a pleasant one when it happens! Years ago it would be normal practice for the person on the mic to chant ‘testing, testing, 1-2-3-1-2-3’ followed by ‘can you hear me at the back?’ but now that never happens. Whether one can hear or unravel what is said from the mic does not matter much just as long as lots of noise emanates and it gets louder and more inane towards the end of a race! Can we take this opportunity to beg venues to get their sound systems ready before racing, after all it is conducive to a good day out at the races.

Excellent commentary from Nick Childs

Allensmore always has this area covered and yesterday there was excellent commentary from Nick Childs. We were most fortunate on the steward platform as Nick entertained us in between races with tales of his work with Paul Nicholls and his personal memories of Kauto Star. It was great to hear Nick has moved into horse ownership and we wish him well with that venture!

Third meeting of four is next Sunday

For those that missed this meeting because of Wimbledon or the Euro 2016 Final should be reminded of next week’s meeting on Sunday 17th July. This represents the third of four scheduled with the last meeting on Sunday 14th August 2016. We hope to see you there. Please look out for a preview of Sunday's meeting on Wednesday evening...
