Betfred Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Grade 3)

The Racing Horse offer more key trends to point the reader in the direction of winners, if not, then at least help narrow down some of the field to highlight the horses that fit the best profile of past winners. This Saturday we look at the Haydock Grand National Trial Grade 3 and will attempt to pick the 1-2-3 on Friday night at 6pm though Blacklion, even with 11st 12lbs to carry, must be top of everyone's list...

Blacklion was fourth in last season's Grand National and won the Randox Health Becher Handicap Chase (Grade 3) at Aintree in December and he looks the one to beat and the 7/2 currently available looks tempting. Nigel Twiston-Davies 9yo gelding gave followers of the heavily supported 7/4 favourite little to worry about, looking the winner several fences out before he stormed clear to win by nine lengths.

After, Twiston-Davies excitedly told ITV Racing: "It was a superb round of jumping, but it's a relief to see him win. We had a brilliant jumper fall in an earlier race so it's lovely when they go round like that. It was exactly what we'd hoped for. He didn't seem to quite get home in the National last year, but we dropped back a mile and our prayers have been answered. Others will come out of the woodwork for the National I'm sure, but he must have a very good chance if we ride him a bit more restrained, like we did today - we've only got eight lengths to find."
