British Modern Art is a half-brother to Coto, who won three times at 5f. The Cable Bay colt has been placed once in two starts. He was beaten 2 1/2l by Fleeting Prince (11/10) when second of 11 at 16/1 on his latest outing at Windsor over 6f on good to firm ground last month.

Trainer form

Michael Bell's profit to a £1 level stake with favourites is £15.09 and he sends his charge to Bath instead of Brighton on Friday over 6f in a Novices Stakes. The trainer does well at Bath and shows 18 winners from 122 runners for 15% and Jason Watson rides. The 15% strike rate for July does not seem huge and his one winner for August dilutes those figures again but the trainer has never been a prolific winner of races, his national average is 13%. Jason Watson has ridden just 8 horses for Bell but won on 2 of those for 25%.

Of his rivals

Aryaaf has displayed some promise in both previous starts and she looks the danger but needs more than she has shown so far. We note trainer Simon Crisford shows a profit of £87.53 when having just one runner at a flat meeting. Just May is a newcomer who could go well despite her lack of previous race experience but would have to better a  RPR of 87+ but the trainer likes Bath and records a 21% strike rate generally but 38% with 2yos here last five years. 

Timeform

MODERN BRITISH ART took a big step forward from his debut when second at Windsor 3 weeks ago, and this looks his for the taking unless newcomer Just May proves to be something out of the ordinary.

Value

The current going is to good to firm but there is some rain due at the course and at the price we must have good ground. Bath is our home town and family have confirmed only a shower has hit the course so far. We had hoped for 8/11 or 4/6 but that looks unlikely which means we are only just on the right side of perceived value. We are reasonably certain we have the Simon Crisford filly covered but Clive Cox has an interesting debutante. Just May (foaled 31 January) is a Lethal Force filly and the dam is a 5f/6f winner.

Bath Racecourse

Bath Racecourse is a left handed, galloping track with a run-in of nearly half a mile, those that commit for home early in the straight often proving vulnerable in the closing stages, this due to the steady climb to the finish. Always worth siding with a jockey who understands the course and Jason Watson has quickly taken to the track scoring 5 winners from just 24 rides a 21% strike rate.
