Newcastle is a left-handed oval galloping track and switched from turf to all-weather during the winter of 2015/16, and like Wolverhampton uses a Tapeta surface. It differs from the majority of the all-weather tracks in that as well as a traditional oval, it has a floodlit straight mile course (only floodlit all-weather straight mile in the world), which is uphill for the final four furlongs, meaning an ability to see out the trip is essential and those who press on too early can prove vulnerable in the later stages.

Our template confirms 3yo favourites in non-handicaps fare best at the course winning at 46% though a small level stakes loss to SP. This category is always our first consideration at any racecourse hence our 3Favinon strategy. Worst category is the 4yo+ favourites in handicaps and at 30% win less races than the national average.

The numbers show Ben Curtis as the top jockey at the course and not just for 2020. Over the past five years he shows 77-440 for 18% and a level stake profit of +21.22 and we expect him to build massively on his value this year!

Trainers with the best strike rate over the past five years include Charlie Hills 16-67 for 24%, William Haggas 33-93 for 35%, John Gosden 43-122 for 35%, Charlie Appleby 13-34 for 38% and Michael Stoute 14-36 for 39%. Any runner from these must be taken seriously and if we do not bet them we rarely oppose them at this course!
