The consensus suggest 98% of those who bet lose, hence the numbers of bookmakers in existence and in profit. The vast majority of punters bet primarily as a form of entertainment and this is good news, they are the cannon-fodder of the industry and represent the plankton of the food chain.

Before betting on horse racing one needs to ask why they are doing so? The Racing Horse believes there are only two answers.

  • Betting for fun/recreation/entertainment

  • Betting to win and make a profit

Of course having fun and making a profit are not mutually exclusive - we make a profit from betting and enjoy doing so. The Racing Horse has been betting for over 52 years with the last 13 showing consistent profits. In that time we have  made every mistake the reader has, and probably a few more than that, but giving up the need or resisting  fun bets helped us enormously from the discipline and money management point of view.

From our perspective betting for fun is FOOLISH, an ERROR and a lack of PROFESSIONALISM! Initially it may seem innocent or a little lapse but it desensitises one for more loses and makes it the norm, there is only one direction of travel from there. Betting isn't about fun, for us now it is viewed as a pension, when we were younger we just wanted extra money in our pocket.

It took me a long time to realise I did not have the knowledge or skill to beat the layers, I know I must have lost five figures plus betting for fun/randomly/entertainment. I remember many times waking up after a heavy loss with a feeling of self-loathing and sometimes worse than that.

It is our opinion that gambling adverts will be banned from television within the next few years because it is destructive. Adverts portray fun and prize winning but those reading this know it is not true!

Don't be fooled into thinking betting is fun - it is NOT! Betting should only be viewed as an investment, so if the reader is GENUINE about making a profit from betting there is only one thing to do - NEVER PLACE or CONSIDER A FUN BET!
