Just 2 winning favourites from the 8 races yesterday for 25% so below the average and the group. The top 5 trainers only had 1 winner between them, we expected 2 or 3 before ground turned. Today might be a little different.

Our top 3 trainers Appleby, Gosden and Haggas did not score on Day One from 4 entries, and they are voting with their feet again today. They are refusing to run their good horses on this horrible ground, so a chance for the lesser lights.

Talking of lesser lights, Richard Hannon got his winner yesterday. Meanwhile, Richard 'have horse will run em' Fahey continues to flood races and now stands at 38 consecutive losers within just 6 days. If you want to back one of his horses at Goodwood, he runs three, one of them fancied, his figures show 4-90 for just 4% (-74.00)

Yesterday we said: "Top jockey this week must surely be William Buick or Oisin Murphy and we say that without checking their rides." Mixed fortunes as Buick scores 2 wins from 3 rides but Murphy draws a blank from 5 rides, we all know he will have winners and we named his rides today (see above). Silvestre De Sousa has made it onto the cold list, he has 5 rides, will he be 0-18. We are alerted!

It is always silly to use the word sense in horse racing betting but we sense either Oisin or Silvestre will have a big price winner today!

Silvestre De Sousa has now ridden 299 winners from 1562 rides for a 19% strike rate (-43.33) winning £4,793,961 in prize money for trainer Mark Johnston. AND, he has ridden 99 winners from 454 rides for a 22% strike rate (-38.76) winning £2,568,978 for trainer Saeed bin Suroor. Suffice it to say we will have a betting stake on numbers 300 and 100, and will email alert members when he has a confirmed jockey booking for either!

Goodwood’s stewards are surely among the busiest in Britain, as it’s tricky to ride and it’s easy to run into traffic problems, especially on the round course. The bottom turn claims its share of victims, because the ground there runs away from you, while the bend into the home straight is very sharp. You get congestion on the dogleg, too, as normally a fair few are still in contention at that point. On the sprint course, the quickest way home is in a straight line, which means the middle is usually a good spot - Jason Weaver

NATIONAL AVERAGE

Please note the percentages in brackets for the Top 5 Trainers at Goodwood show their national averages over the past 5 years.

Comparing current form against that of the national average is our preferred measuring tool, the maths suggests a factual position and not one of bias. Besides, the higher the national average, with respect to the other trainers, the greater chance of success. The higher the trainer's success rate, the more likely the horse is to win.
