WORST WINNING FAVOURITES CATEGORY (5 years)
Winning 4yo+ favourites in handicaps fare worst showing 365-1203 for 30% and a big level stake loss of -99.38

2021 WINNING FAVOURITES
Winning favourites in non-handicaps this year show 41-102 for 40% (-19.73), whilst winning favourites in handicaps record 94-266 for 35% (+5.95)

TRAINERS
Wolverhampton does not reflect an expected set of results for top trainers. For example, if we asked the reader to name the top two trainers at the course over the past 5 years, would they have named DAVID EVANS (11%) and MICHAEL APPLEBY (10%)? There is a skill quotient but their huge number of competitive entries in low grade racing are a big factor. Very few racecourses show the top trainer recording an 11% strike rate at the course and even less those with a national average of 10%.

We note MARK JOHNSTON has a national average of 15% yet scores at 13% (though 19% this year), whilst MICHAEL APPLEBY has a national average of 11% and scores at 10%, so although they have winners here their horses perform below their NAs. The fact we have the named five trainers on the Wolverhampton Leader Board generally shows the quality of horse winning there.

Antony Brittain has 4 runners at the track today, Mark Johnston has 2, William Haggas just one (MIDRARR 3.15). Andrew Balding is red hot currently and has won 3 of his last 6 entries and 15-64 for 23% in the last 14 days, he runs 2 at the course today.

JOCKEYS
Luke Morris and Richard Kingscote have both ridden over 100 winners in the past 5 years at Wolverhampton but carry huge level stake losses to SP. Jack Mitchell has the best strike rate at 21%.

Franny Norton has started a losing run, now 0-22, he has 2 rides today. Tom Marquand looks the jockey to follow and rides MIDRARR 3.15 which was almost a Pacafi. He has 6 rides it total and will look for a win double.

OWNERS
The top owners at the course are Godolphin and they score at a big 30% strike rate though not close to a profit at level stakes to SP. They do not have a runner at Wolverhampton on Monday. Antony Brittain takes third spot but at a lowly 9% strike rate figure.

JASON WEAVER on WOLVERHAMPTON

Wolverhampton’s 5f, 7f and extended 1m starts can be tricky from a jockey’s point of view, because they’re very much draw-dependent. It’s a big advantage being among the low, left-hand numbers. The 1m 4f start can also be a slight problem, but at least from there you’ve got a longer trip to get sorted out. Nobody went round the inside in the early days and, while I’m not sure it’s a disadvantage to be there now, most jocks still shy away from that rail. It’s a tight course, but well laid-out and very fair.
