The Racing Horse offers our Racecourse Template for Ascot on Friday 17 December 2021. There is a 7-race card and the going is expected to be soft, good to soft in places.

Shishkin (Pacafi) and Energumene are two of the most exciting horses in training, they are set for an explosive showdown at Ascot on Saturday in the Grade 1 SBK Clarence House Chase. They will take on Amoola Gold and defending champion First Flow in the feature race.

(%): National Average SAW: Since a win E: Entries R: Rides

DAN & HARRY SKELTON: Shishkin and Energumene will provide the major headlines today but our template has highlighted the strong hand the Skeltons have today. We have been guilty regarding the team as an offshoot of Paul Nicholls but their 19% national average is highly worthy and Harry rides at 22%. Over the past 5 years at Ascot they show 13-89 for 15% which is -4% below their national average of 19 but season 2020/2021 showed 8-26 for a huge 31% (+29.78).

Today the team send out 9 runners to 3 courses and 6 of those to Ascot where they must surely have a winner, they run: DOCTOR PARNASSUS 12.35, UNEXPECTED PARTY 1.45, MOLLY OLLYS WISHES 2.20, KNIGHT IN DUBAI 2.55, AMOOLA GOLD 3.35 and GALIA DES LITEAUX 4.05.

FAVOURITES: The 5-year sample from Ascot is comparatively small so should be acknowledged. In this time frame favourites in handicaps fare poorly at 24% so way below the national average. Winning favourites in non-handicaps jumping obstacles score best showing 45-95 for 47.57% and a -4.38 loss to level stakes. Best category is chase favourites in non-handicaps who show 19-36 for 53% and a small level stake loss of -1.68.

TRAINERS: Nicky Henderson (2 entries) and Paul Nicholls (5 entries) are easily the two top trainers at the course, but Dan Skelton has 6 entries for tomorrow and looks set to be the trainer to follow! The suggestion is these 13 runners will provide the headlines and at least 3 winners, maybe more! Willie Mullins has 2 strong entries but looks booked for two second places!

JOCKEYS: Harry Skelton has a national average of 22%, so higher than Harry Cobden who rides for Paul Nicholls. He has 7 rides on Saturday and a couple of those look to have fabulous chances. He is expected to have a big day.

OWNERS: Only J P McManus (17%) of the top 5 owners have runners tomorrow, he has an absolute stack of runners at Navan (12).

His horse JONBON 1.25 Haydock looks a really good thing. Unibet offer 4/9 and that looks a fair price to us, and we are seriously considering Pacafi status. Hard to oppose, had 1/2 been available we would have already backed this horse. If the each way money keeps coming for Might I it is possible he may touch 1/2, we will have a cut-off point at 11am as to our intentions!

SHISHKIN 3.35 ASCOT is a PACAFI:

Nicky Henderson has confirmed the following: "I’m pleased to say that everything has gone to plan since the Desert Orchid Chase so it made perfect sense to come here because he was so well. We did have the option of the Game Spirit but this is at the right time and while it’s a proper match up, I’m very happy with where we are with him and he goes there at the top of his game. Of course Energumene is going to be a very tough nut to crack, and there is absolutely nothing between them whatsoever, so it really is a case of ‘may the best horse win’. He’s schooled and worked well at home since Kempton and there’s nothing else I can add that you don’t already know yourself. As long as he keeps straight over his fences and the ground isn’t too tacky after all the frost we’ve had, let’s hope he remains undefeated which will set him up nicely for a crack at the Champion Chase. It’s a proper horse race and so it should be!"

JONBON 1.25 Haydock

Many people have crabbed him because he hasn’t won a truly run race but there’s nothing he can do about that and if you look at the fractions when he won at Ascot last time, he must have been going pretty quick because he put plenty of daylight between him and the chasing pack and ended up winning easily. He has a great turn of foot and is very uncomplicated which is what you want in a racehorse like him and everything has gone very well at home since December. He used to be quite buzzy at home but is much more relaxed now and that seems to be the case on the track as well.

Mick Fitzgerald on Ascot

The fences on the far side are quite tricky, particularly for a novice, but, if you’re on a horse that can jump them and freewheel nicely on the downhill section, it can usually win for you. Handling those obstacles smoothly saves an awful lot of energy. It’s a front-runners’ track, too, especially in small fields of novices, but it’s very difficult to win from the front in a big-field handicap. Saving ground when you can and making sure you meet the fences right are the two biggest factors to keep in mind when you’re riding Ascot.
