CHESTER Racecourse Template (Friday 6 May 2022)

The Racing Horse offers our powerful and insightful RACECOURSE TEMPLATE for CHESTER (Friday 6 May 2022). There is a 7-race card including 5 handicaps, a Conditions race and a Group 2. The going is expected to be good to soft.

The Racing Horse hopes Dave P and his family have a FANTASTIC DAY OUT! We will attempt to land the Placepot with our selections, see our pertinence board below, but first we are reminded of the track configuration:

The track is left handed, very sharp. A circular course that's only just over a mile round, it's on the turn almost throughout and has a run-in of under two furlongs, heavily favouring those that race to the fore as it's easy to find trouble with little time to recover. A high draw at Chester is a major disadvantage, even in middle-distance races, and particularly so in large fields

FIXTURES
Friday 6 May 2022

FAVOURITES: Our sample size for Chester is small and this fact is best acknowledged. Winning favourites at Chester show 125-364 for 33.89% and a level stake loss -19.98. Non-handicaps win at 43% for almost a break-even figure, whilst handicap favourites win at 30% (-18.38) so below the national average.

TRAINERS: From the number of winners perspective, the top trainers at the course over the past 5-years are: A Balding (40), T Easterby (22), R Beckett (17), I Williams (16) & W Haggas (12). Tim Easterby is currently on the cold list showing 0-35. He has just one runner tomorrow. Andrew Balding (20%) has 6 runners entered and will surely boost his record at the track, whilst hot trainer William Haggas has 3 entered. Between these two trainer there must be at least 2 winners!

AIDAN O'BRIEN has the most fabulous figures at Chester and recorded a fabulous 34/1 double from just two runners on Wednesday. He now shows 34-87 for a massive 39% producing a level stake profit of +46.93. He only has one entry for Friday.

COLD LIST TRAINERS: Dermot Weld makes the trip to Chester and to date he is 1-10 for 10% at Chester. He runs FALCON EIGHT 3.15 (to be ridden by Frankie Dettori) but is currently 0-39. This horse won this race last year!

As we go to post Ian Williams has 13 entered, one imagines a few withdrawals.

JOCKEYS: Ryan Moore is now 46-170 for 27% at Chester after a brilliant treble at 11/8, 7/1  & 10/3 on Wednesday. His figures in the last 14 days show 19-48 for 40%. He has 3 rides tomorrow. Apprentice Harry Davies has 4 rides and it will be interesting to see what he makes of the course.

Franny Norton has 3 rides. He has ridden 140 winners at Chester which is 72 more than any other jockey. Last year he rode a winner on each day of the May Meeting.

COLD LIST JOCKEYS: As we go to post both Jamie Spencer (0-26) and David Probert (0-21) are on the cold list but we doubt they will be much longer.

OWNERS: Marwan Koukash has 3 entries whilst King Power have just a single entry.

BY THE WAY: Hugo Palmer has recently made the journey up the M6 to join forces with Michael Owen and Andrew Black at Manor House Stable in Malpas, Cheshire and it was imperative the trainer got off to a good and quick start. This duly happened on day one when Ever Given was absolutely smashed in the betting mark. We are expecting more from this team than was provided by Tom Dascombe.

PLEASE NOTE: Results does not include Thursday's racing.

1.30
TRH Verdict: FOOLS RUSH IN (H Palmer) formerly with T Dascombe, Ben Curtis rides.
BOARDMAN (T Easterby) trainer on cold list, trainer shows profit of £22.23 when one runner at a meeting, completed hat-trick over C&D last May, Jim Crowley rides

TRH Verdict: FOOLS RUSH IN (H Palmer) at 13/2 (William Hill). Hugo Palmer had poor figures at Chester but we expect his 12% at the track to be closer to 20% from now on. His winner on the first day was absolutely smashed in the betting. This horse goes well fresh naturally and has no ground issues, but Palmer would have made sure he is primed for tomorrow. The horse can hit a flat spot in his races so no room for error, must fill a place at the very least!

2.05
LORD PROTECTOR (R Beckett) beaten favourite last time out, Rob Hornby rides
MUJTABA (W Haggas) beaten favourite last time out, trainer 24% in early season and 25% with horses racing 10f+, Jim Crowley rides
CAP FRANCAIS (I Williams) winner in the last 7 days, Ben Curtis rides
RESTORER (I Williams) weighted to win 95 > 86, Royston Ffrench rides

TRH Verdict: MUJTABA (William Haggas) at 5/2 (general). This lightly raced 4yo is forgiven his poor display in the Lincoln, this trip will suit this course winner. Trainer in form with the excellent Jim Crowley riding.

2.40
MEGALLAN (J & T Gosden) 2nd behind Group 1 performer last time out, type to do better as a 4yo, Frankie Dettori rides

TRH Verdict: Megallan (J & T Gosden) at evens (general) looks the banker. This is a smart colt who did nothing wrong last time out. Frankie Dettori rides and we will enjoy seeing him race against the red hot Ryan Moore. We considered this combination as a Pacafi but for the form of Moore and the tactical nature of the race!

3.15
FALCON EIGHT (D Weld) won this race last year, beaten favourite last time out, trainer on cold list, Frankie Dettori rides
SOLENT GATEWAY (H Palmer) formerly with Tom Dascombe, Ben Curtis 35% on winning favourites

TRH Verdict: SOLENT GATEWAY (H Palmer) at 9/2 (Bet365 & William Hill). Solent Gateway was an eye-catcher at Epsom on his return and probably had this race in mind. Won smoothly on the step up to 2m here last term and now looks ready to run a big race!

3.45
FLAMING RIB (H Palmer) drops from Group 3 to Class 3, Ben Curtis rides
KING'S LYNN (A Balding) goes well fresh, trainer 20% at Chester, David Probert rides

TRH Verdict: KING'S LYNN (A Balding) at 9/4 (general). This looks a 2-horse race and it was hard to nominate the winner. Second in this last year and two Listed wins later in the season means he has leading claims on return. The 3yo Flaming Rib has every right to go close - an exciting race!

4.20
SCAMPI (A Balding) trainer has won 2 of the last 7 runnings, trainer 20% at the course, David Probert rides
ARCTIC FOX (M Todhunter) hot trainer, Harry Russell rides
RED FLYER (J Best & K Jewell) longest traveller 239 miles, Saffie Osborne rides

TRH Verdict: SCAMPI (A Balding) at 7/2 (general) looks the logical choice, this one to be ridden by the exciting Harry Davies. Had Arctic Fox had a seasonal run we would have nominated her at the big price of 14/1 (Bet365). This is an apprentice race and we know beforehand some of these jockeys are going to get into a right ole pickle on this track!

4.55
BELLATRIXSA (V Williams) trainer and jockey won this race last year, Franny Norton rides
DANCE TO PARIS (L Wadham) beaten favourite last time out, Rob Hornby rides

TRH Verdict: BELLATRIXSA (V Williams) at 11/4 (general) The price is gone for this one now (was 9/2), but by the time this race is run  She has low mileage on the Flat and is clearly progressive. Franny Norton may not have ridden a winner at this May Meeting but his record at the course stands out. Call My Bluff at 9/1 looks the value in the race and we imagine a much bigger price on Betfair Exchange will be available for a horse from this stable.

Jason Weaver on Chester

At Chester, for most of any race, your horse will be leading with its near-fore, the one closer to the inside rail. And you have only two chances to change that: in the short home straight, or after the winning post in contests longer than a full circuit. You need to maximise those if you want to make ground or get a breather into one, because it’s not natural for a horse to lead on its near-fore all the way. It can pay to be brave in sprints. The straight may be short, but there’s still time to ride a finish.
