CHEPSTOW CONFIGURATION: It is a left-handed, undulating, oval-shaped track, about two miles in extent, with a run-in of five furlongs. While not an out-and-out galloping course, owing to the pronounced undulations, the track puts the emphasis on stamina almost regardless of ground. All races up to a mile are run on the straight course.
FAVOURITES: The sample size at Chepstow is not the biggest so beware a literal translation, but all numbers have value. The course is punter-friendly and a £1 win stake to SP on every race (442 races) produced a tiny loss of -1.24, so just a modicum of good housekeeping would have produced a decent profit. Winning favourites at the course show 164-442 for 37.10% so around +5% above the national average of 32%. Non-handicap winning favourites score at 45% whilst handicap favourites score at 34%.
TRAINERS: Tim Easterby (9%) makes the 228-mile trip from North Yorkshire and is almost certain to get on the score sheet, he sends 6 runners including ALBEGREY 5.30, SNASH 6.30, HIGHWAYGREY 7.30, MANILA SCOUSE 8.00, BOARDMAN & QUEST FOR FUN 8.30.
Richard Fahey (11%) travels 225-miles and brings 9 horses to race whilst Charlie Fellowes (12%) has 3 runners. Strange that his career shows just 5 runners at Chepstow scoring 1 winner. He could double his tally tomorrow, he runs POWER OF DARKNESS 5.30, SHAHBAZ 7.00 & ALTRIUM 8.30
JOCKEYS: None of our top jockeys at the course have rides here tomorrow. Four jockeys catch the eye given the quality and perceived chance of their rides.
Saffie Osborne (11%) is unlikely to match her first-round heroics at Yarmouth where she scored a brilliant hat-trick. That said, she has 5 rides and looks likely to score again, she looks favourite to be top jockey again in this second round. At Chepstow she scores 4-38 for 11% which matches her national average, but we notice there are 9 second places recorded within those figures. Her rides include CHINESE KNOT 6.00, EXECUTIVE DECISION 6,30, GORDON GREY 7.00, FANTASY BELIEVER 7.30 & STONE CIRCLE 8.00.
Oisin Orr (13%) is riding in good form and visits Chepstow for the first time. He has 6 rides and a couple of real interest, they include HARTSWOOD 5.30, EMINNY 6.00, INDIAN FALCON 6.30, OLD SMOKE 7.00, MUZAFFAR 7.30 & RAMAZAN 8.30.
One jockey has a full book of 7 rides and could be an angle into the meeting. Marco Ghiani (15%) is 2-12 for 17% at Chepstow and his rides include SNAPCRACKLEPOP 5.30, FOREVER A DIAMOND 6.00, HOT CHESTNUT 6.30, I STILL HAVE FAITH 7.00, PLEDGE OF HONOUR 7.30, BETWEENTHESTICKS 8.00 & SAXON KING 8.30.

Chepstow takes a fair bit of getting. Because it’s so up hill and down dale, stamina has to come into play and it’s also worth noting that the straight is quite long, meaning that some horses start to race a lot earlier than is ideal. If you’re on one that wants to make the running, for example, you’ll often get a few keen to take you on earlier than you might like, so patience is vital for a jockey. Long-striding horses can often go well on the straight track but, as it’s quite stiff, they definitely need to get home - Jason Weaver
