CHEPSTOW CONFIGURATION: Left handed, undulating. Oval-shaped track, about two miles in extent, with a run-in of 5 furlongs. All races at up to a mile are run on the straight course. While not an out-and-out galloping course, owing to the pronounced undulations, the track puts the emphasis on stamina almost regardless of ground.

FAVOURITES: Chepstow is a punter-friendly racecourse and we have the receipts. Over the past 5  years winning favourites at the course show 145-378 for 38.36% so +5% above the national average. All 6 categories produce decent figures (albeit from a small sample), though best category for strike rate are 3yo winning favourites in non-handicaps showing 25-46 for 54% (-2.58). Note, all 3 categories (age-groups) of winning favourites in handicaps produce a profit to level stakes and score well above the national average of 29%, something very unusual in a Racecourse Template!

TRAINERS: Ralph Beckett's (18%) runners at Chepstow must always be respected and processed. He sends just one in MIAMI MEMORIES and at £32,000 one of his cheaper juvenile fillies. The trainer scores over 20% with first time start 2yos and 6-12 for 50% at Chepstow with this age group over the past 5 years. Rob Hornby rides.

JOCKEYS: Hollie Doyle (15%) is top jockey at Chepstow scoring 26% at the course. She has 4 runners in WEDGEWOOD 5.25, ASSESSMENT 7.00, MAYZ 8.30 & MARMALADE LADY 9.00.

Gina Mangan (10%) is second-top jockey at the course and rides Chepstow well when measured against her national average scoring 17-104 for 16% so +6% above. She has 5 rides including  WON'T STAND DOWN 5.25, SIENNA GOLD 6.00, ABLE KANE 7.00, KENSTONE 8.00 & DUCHESS 8.30.

William Cox (5%) also has 5 rides including HOWZAK 5.25, TIGGY WEBBER 6.00, LOOBY 6.30, SECRET STRENGTH 7.00 & VAPE 7.30. Hard to back a jockey with just a 5% strike rate but he is a different proposition at Chepstow scoring 13-101 for 13% (+30.96) so an 160% increase above his national average!

Billy Loughane (14%) is another jockey with 5 rides including VIOLET LOVE 6.00, ROSY AFFAIR 6.30, VAUNTED 7.30, CHILD OF LIR 8.30 & EXCEPTIONALITY 9.00

OWNERS: The Cross Racing Club (10%) are the top owners at the course and have a single entry in ROMANOVICH 8.30 trained by John O'Shea and ridden by Jack Doughty (7)

Paul & Ann de Weck (8%) have a runner in CONNIE'S ROSE 7.05 trained by Grace Harris and ridden by Callum Hutchinson (3).

Chepstow takes a fair bit of getting. Because it’s so up hill and down dale, stamina has to come into play and it’s also worth noting that the straight is quite long, meaning that some horses start to race a lot earlier than is ideal. If you’re on one that wants to make the running, for example, you’ll often get a few keen to take you on earlier than you might like, so patience is vital for a jockey. Long-striding horses can often go well on the straight track but, as it’s quite stiff, they definitely need to get home - Jason Weaver
