The Racing Horse offers our Chepstow Racecourse Template for Monday 24 June 2024. There is a 6-race card containing 5 Handicaps and a Novice Stakes Race. The going is expected to be good to firm. It is disappointing only 42 horses compete across the 6 races in perfect Flat Racing weather, but Hollie Doyle has 6 of those rides and certain to feature if not take centre stage!

Upcoming Chepstow Fixtures:

Thursday 18 July 2024

CHEPSTOW CONFIGURATION: Left handed, undulating. Oval-shaped track, about two miles in extent, with a run-in of 5 furlongs. All races at up to a mile are run on the straight course. While not an out-and-out galloping course, owing to the pronounced undulations, the track puts the emphasis on stamina almost regardless of ground.

FAVOURITES: It's official, Chepstow is a punter-friendly racecourse and we have the receipts. Over the past 5  years winning favourites at the course show 152-392 for 38.78% so +5% above the national average. Note, all 3 categories (age-groups) of winning favourites in handicaps produce a profit to level stakes and score well above the national average of 29%, something very unusual in a Racecourse Template! Best category for winning strike rate are 3yo winning favourites in non-handicaps who show 25-46 for 54% (-2.31).

TRAINERS: Grant Tuer (12%) travels 236-miles from North Yorkshire to visit Chepstow for the very first time, why now we ask? He has 2 runners including RIBBA HILL 2.45 & GUNNERSIDE 4.15. Jockey Harrison Shaw (7%) rode a 28/1 winner for the trainer on Saturday and he rides both horses. Interestingly, Ribba Hill won on his debut at 11/1 when ridden by Shaw and is the only winner in the field, yet does not set the standard.

Only John O'Shea (8%) from the leader board has a runner tomorrow. He runs ROSE FANDANGO 3.45 to be ridden by William Carson though hard to see this mare troubling the judge.

JOCKEYS: Hollie Doyle (15%) is featured on our Red Flag segment where we share a concern albeit in a relative sense! William Cox (5%) is on the leader board and has 3 rides.

Rob Hornby (11%) is having a poor year measured against his own standards scoring just 22-234 for 9% (-109.22). He has 4 rides including RED CLOUD 2.10, PORTERINTHEJUNGLE 3.15, HOWZAK 3.45 & THUNDEROUS LOVE 4.50.

Sean D Bowen (6%) rode his first winner at Chepstow at last Monday's meeting and he has 4 rides including QUICKFIRE 2.10, DYNAMITE KATIE 3.15, PORT NOIR 3.45 & ZELMA 4.50.

Saffie Osborne (12%) has a couple of rides with place chances at least including MISS DANDYLION 2.45 & MAVERICK STYLE 3.15.

OWNERS: Paul & Ann de Weck (8%) have a single runner in SISTERS IN THE SKY 3.15 and this 5yo gelding trained by Grace Harris and ridden by Hollie Doyle, will be their 100th runner at the course. The owners are currently 10-99 for 10% (+21.17).

RED FLAG: Hollie Doyle (15%) has a full book of 6 rides and she is our main angle into the meeting. Her rides include DAYLIGHT RANSOM 2.10, OFFIAH'S BOY 2.45, SISTERS IN THE SKY 3.15, RHUBARB 3.45, PROTEST RALLY 4.15 & RINNOVATI 4.50. Hollie is top jockey at the course this year 3-10 for 30% (+12.80) & for the last 5 years 22-87 for 25% (+11.79) so +10% above her national average of 15%. The bookings above are for 6 different trainers.

TRH was very interested to hear the jockey's comments during Royal Ascot regarding how she has to search for rides despite her huge success, and in a relative sense we have noticed that. Here are her last 4-year figures to date:

2024:	71-548 13% -162.92 £1,108,433
2023:	117-795 15% -147.89 £2,690,323
2022:	151-1005 15% -201.52 £3,299,512
2021:	172-1189 14% -194.58 £2,940,695

What are the numbers above suggesting? As we approach the end of June she has scored 71 winners, so well on the way to her ton, but they have come at 13% which is -2% below her national average! Those 2pts are significant and we notice this year she has ridden 70 second places and the 71-70 ratio would not sit comfortably for her! As we go to post we note she has just 2 rides at Brighton (Tuesday), just 2 rides at Kempton (Thursday) & just 2 rides at Newmarket (Friday). TRH expects a determined Hollie Doyle at Chepstow on Monday and PROTEST RALLY, trained by Liam Bailey (first runner at the track), looks a great bet at 6/5 with Bet365 (17.04).

Chepstow takes a fair bit of getting. Because it’s so up hill and down dale, stamina has to come into play and it’s also worth noting that the straight is quite long, meaning that some horses start to race a lot earlier than is ideal. If you’re on one that wants to make the running, for example, you’ll often get a few keen to take you on earlier than you might like, so patience is vital for a jockey. Long-striding horses can often go well on the straight track but, as it’s quite stiff, they definitely need to get home - Jason Weaver
