WINNING FAVOURITES: Given the amount of poor quality of racing at Wolverhampton, we are continually surprised as to the high strike rates of winning favourites, especially in non-handicap races! The last 5-year figures show 956-2659 for 35.95% for a level stake loss of -162.61 so about 3% above the national average. Best category for strike rate and profit are 4yo+ in non-handicaps showing 93-191 for 49% (+14.79). Winning non-handicap favourites across the board score 349-767 for 46%. Worst category are 4yo+ in handicaps with 347-1136 for 31% (-108.58). TRAINERS: Partly based on volume, the fact David Evans (10%), T Carroll (10%), D Loughnane (11%) and Michael Appleby (11%) are the top 4 trainers at the track highlights the the class of horse that runs and wins here. For context purposes only, we note David Evans has ran 575 horses at this track over the past 5 years for his 64 winners, over the same period William Haggas shows 44-152 foe 29%. On a personal note we could not back a David Evans runner at any price, whether it contained perceived value or not. He is neither conducive to profit nor our style of betting. JOCKEYS: Interesting Neil Callan rides two for Marco Botti, he rode a winner for the trainer yesterday. The top three jockeys for this year are David Probert 11-48 got 23% (+10.87), Jack Mitchell 10-25 for 40% (+10.87) and Rossa Ryan 10-31 for 32% (+14.54) though Mitchell is not riding at Wolverhampton this time. Probert has 3 rides and Ryan has 4 and there must be a winner from this pairing! OWNERS: Godolphin (29%) at the track, have an interesting runner tomorrow in STORMY OCEAN 8.00 (Class 3 handicap worth £6,281) with the brilliant William Buick due to ride - this entry demands a long hard look! The question we would like answered is "why is William Buick going to Wolverhampton at 8pm to ride just one horse in an average race after his rigours of Meydan." William Hill currently offer 13/8 to small money (09.43 Monday). By the way, two things, Stormy Ocean is also entered at Chelmsford on Thursday (£51,540 race), and Buick is 0-8 over the past 15 days. |

WOLVERHAMPTON RACECOURSE - JASON WEAVERWolverhampton’s 5f, 7f and extended 1m starts can be tricky from a jockey’s point of view, because they’re very much draw-dependent. It’s a big advantage being among the low, left-hand numbers. The 1m 4f start can also be a slight problem, but at least from there you’ve got a longer trip to get sorted out. Nobody went round the inside in the early days and, while I’m not sure it’s a disadvantage to be there now, most jocks still shy away from that rail. It’s a tight course, but well laid-out and very fair. |
