(%): National Average E: Entries R: Rides

COURSE: Right handed. There are two bends. All races up to a 1¼m use the lower bend, and in excess of 11f use the top bend. Although there is a five-furlong run-in from the top bend, the turns and the pronounced downhill gradients make Goodwood essentially a sharp track, favouring handy types, particularly in the shorter-distance races. The five-furlong course is one of the fastest in the country, meaning speedy sorts often have an advantage. A notoriously tricky course, those held up regularly meeting trouble in the straight, particularly when kept to the rail. The track is unique in more ways than one and the switchback nature of the course can favour those with previous experience at the track.

FAVOURITES: Goodwood is generally and incorrectly regarded as not a good course for favourites given the scrimmaging and trouble in running that occurs there, but that is NOT reflected in our figures. In fact, had you backed every favourite at Goodwood over the past years you would have made a huge profit of +42.19 (202-532). However, the figures are abnormal, in that non-handicap favourites show a loss whilst handicap favourites show a nice profit.

Non-handicaps show 88-215 for 41% (-3.70) yet winning favourites in handicaps score 114-317 for 36% (+45.89) with the latter showing a strike rate above the national average (32)%. Winning favourites aged 4yo+ have great figures across the board showing 94-217 for 43.32% and a big level stake profit of +60.99

TRAINERS: Mark Johnston is top trainer at Goodwood over the past 5 years largely based on volume. Please note figures are combined with M Johnston and C & M Johnston

JOCKEYS: There are 7 hot jockeys with rides tomorrow and they will probably ride winners of most of the 8 races. Ryan Moore could be top jockey after Day 1 with a good book of rides.

COLD LIST JOCKEYS: James Doyle is one of our best UK jockeys yet still not fully revered. He has not ridden a winner for 19 days and 39 rides but he will ride winners at Goodwood this week and make no mistake we will be staking him! He has 2 rides tonight at Windsor on SPRING IS SPRUNG 7.00 & BUSHFIRE 8.10 and we are seeking best prices on those.

OWNERS: Godolphin (24%) have 3 entries for Tuesday, they are BRILLIANT LIGHT 1.50, MYSTERIOUS LIGHT 2.25 & MISCHIEF MAGIC 4.45.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum (15%) run FOREST FALCON 1.50, OUTSIDE WORLD & RAINBOW COLOURS 5.20

Shadwell Estate (22%) enter LANEQASH 3.00 & KIDWAH 5.55

BY THE WAY: Mark Johnston is top trainer at the track but the new team C & M Johnston are yet to get off the mark currently showing 0-9. This includes 2 second places, 3 third places and 1 fourth place. They will get off the mark, but on which day?

JASON WEAVER on GOODWOOD

Goodwood’s stewards are surely among the busiest in Britain, as it’s tricky to ride and it’s easy to run into traffic problems, especially on the round course. The bottom turn claims its share of victims, because the ground there runs away from you, while the bend into the home straight is very sharp. You get congestion on the dogleg, too, as normally a fair few are still in contention at that point. On the sprint course, the quickest way home is in a straight line, which means the middle is usually a good spot.
