What is a NATIONAL AVERAGE?
How to PROFIT from the PACAFI

YORK RACECOURSE: Left handed, flat. In essence, a very fair track, ideal for the long-striding galloper. In recent seasons, the field tends to come more down the centre of the track than has historically been the case, particularly if conditions are testing. The track was made into a circuit in 2005, and offers a straight 5f/6f track, while 7f races start on a chute.

FAVOURITES: The sample size at York is not big so the figures should be treated with a little caution. Winning favourites at York show 149-468 for 32% so mirroring the national average which would normally produce a big loss to level stakes. But, in some contradiction backing favourites blind at the course only produces a small loss of -16.77 suggesting a little filtration from those 468 runners could turn that loss into a profit. For us, there are easier opportunities to profit elsewhere!

TRAINERS: It is hard for trainers to score big numbers at this course. William Haggas (23%) is top trainer at York yet only wins at 18% so a big 5% below his national average. Our top 5 trainers at the course and those 4 trainers on the cold list provide 24 runners and one imagines multiple winners from these 2 groupings.

JOCKEYS: William Buick (23%), Ryan Moore (18%) & Danny Tudhope (17%) each have 4 rides whilst Tom Marquand (15%) has 5 rides

OWNERS: Godolphin (25%) have 2 runners for the meeting including WHITE WOLF 1.50 & CREATIVE FORCE 3.00. Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum (20%) have 3 runners in EMARAATY ANA 3.00, NOVAKAI 3.35 & CHUZZLEWIT 4.10. King Power (14%) have 2 runners with BIELSA 2.25 & ART POWER 3.00. Clipper Logistics (15%) have a single runner in BRAVE EMPIRE 4.45

RED FLAG: The figures at York are compounded by the poor negative strike-stats of trainers and owners - it is difficult to win consistently here! Of the 15 components of our trainer, jockey, owner composite, only 2 show positive strike-stats (Michael Dods at +4% & Connor Beasley at +6%).

Context is everything when viewing these figures and if proof was needed about the difficulty of winning at York we look at Charlie Appleby's figures, he places horses better than any other UK trainer. He scores 9-53 for 17% (-17.59) and this is -12% below his national average! Furthermore, jockey William Buick returns 10-97 for 10% (-55.09) despite winning £1.1m prize money at the course. He has 3 rides at the course on Wednesday.

There is a jockey who rides the course brilliantly - he is Frankie Dettori (23%)! Over the past 5 years, so at the back-end of his career, he scores 15-62 for 24% (-12.89) and winning close to £2m in prize money. By the way, he scored 5-16 for 31% and a level stake profit of +5.87 in 2022. He is not riding on Wednesday, but has 3 rides on Thursday.

FINALLY: Frankie Dettori's all-time career figures at York show 186-956 for 19% (-72.58) and winning prize money of £11,082,447. Amongst those figures are 122 second places, 126 third places and 97 fourth places so 56% in the first four places.

SINCERE APOLOGIES (Update): When we prepared this template Frankie Detorri had not been booked to ride SOUL SISTER 3.35. Had we known, we would have included the information with the above comments, sincere apologies for missing this!

Because they can start racing from a long way out at York, which is a big galloping track, sometimes the last one to challenge has an advantage. Some people think it suits front-runners, but more often than not the one in the lead will get picked off at around the 1f marker. There’s no doubt it’s a quality course, though, wide, with no ridges, lovely sweeping turns and no draw bias. It can become very testing when the ground gets soft - it is KnavesMIRE, after all - and then it really takes some getting. - Jason Weaver
