FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket (July) show 186-505 for 36.83 (-51.28) so around 4% above the national average. All six categories score at between 35% and 42%.

TRAINERS: Normally only our very top trainers need apply at this course, but this is a night meeting with Royal Ascot and Goodwood (night meeting) also taking place. That said J & T Gosden (22%) have 3 runners and include SHADOW OF WAR & GOVERNOR OF INDIA 6.30 and NEVER ENDING 7.05. The 6.30 Novice Race looks particularly competitive and Gosden has confused things more with 2 in the same race, one for Lady Bamford and one for Qatar Racing. The market will give us a clue.

Michael Stoute (19%) is of interest to us, he is 0-17 over a period of 15 days with 4 beaten favourites amongst those, he has 2 runners with chances GIIDECCA 5.55 & PREPENSE 8.10.

One trainer who will come off the cold list today is George Boughey (17%). He is currently 0-28 over 6 days, has 2 runners at Newmarket and 7 elsewhere.

JOCKEYS: There are 2 class jockeys with 5 rides each and the suggestion is they will feature heavily on the card. Neil Callan (15%) has rides on OOPS 5.55, MIGHTY RIVER 7.05, ASHMORE 7.40, PASTICHE 8.10 & MARY OF MODENA 8.45. The jockey shows 6-28 for 21% (+13.25) on the Newmarket July Course.

Jack Mitchell (17%) rides include FAAYZAH 5.55, TUIJAAR 6.30, ISLAND STAR 7.05, FOREST DEMON 7.40 & VIA CORONE 8.10

OWNERS: Godolphin (24%) have a single runner in VIA CORONE 8.10 to be ridden by Jack Mitchell.

Cheveley Park Stud (16%) have two runners and both will go close to winning. They are GIUDECCA 5.55 & NEVER ENDING 7.05.

RED FLAG: Godolphin have dropped from a national average of 25% to 24%. This is down to the drop in form (in a relative sense) of ace trainer Charlie Appleby who has been recording 19% in May and June. We cannot find two successive months of such low comparative strike rates from this trainer in the last 5 years, which suggests something has been amiss. We do not think it is a quality issue, probably more a domestic one. He was quizzed about this on ITV but did not really answer the question.

June: 7-33 21% -15.44
May: 12-65 18% -19.22
Total: 19-98 19% -34.66

We note the last 14 days show Appleby scoring 8-25 for 32% and this could be the start of his next upswing. The trainer runs VIA CORONE 8.10 (currently 9/2) and on this occasion we are opting out from backing her in regard to our CHARLIE APPLEBY STRATEGYThis does not mean she cannot win but it is a small competitive field and she was very green last time out at Haydock. She was a 27 April foal and won her only start on the AW as a 2yo and was just reeled in after hanging both ways in a Class 4 Novice at Haydock when not expected to win at 6/1. She can be expected to improve significantly with racing and from this run.

GODOLPHIN COMMENTS: She is a half-sister to winners Blue Trail (1m AW; RPR 104) and Monza City (Ity 7f); made winning debut in 7f fillies' novice stakes at Kempton in November 2022; close second (reeled in late) in 7f fillies' novice at Haydock in May 2023.

She has an interesting jockey booking in Jack Mitchell (17%) who shows 6-23 for 26% (-2.90) when he combines with the trainer. At this course he scores 12-65 for 18% (+2.87) and this filly is 1 of 5 rides for the jockey.

BY THE WAY: Thought the information we were given in regard to ALFRED COVE was very good when second at 8/1 (bigger prices were available and generous place prices on the exchange). Had he raced on the track he might have won? Not sure how many yards Sarah Bowen gave the winner yet beaten just 2 lengths, also the winner was drawn in stall 12 of 12. Jockeyship is more than critical and this race the most perfect example...

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill - you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face - Jason Weaver
