UPCOMING RACECOURSE TEMPLATES
Newmarket July (Saturday)
COURSE: The July Course is 2m1f in extent with a right-handed bend at halfway, the first mile being part of the Cesarewitch course, the last the straight Bunbury mile. Notwithstanding the undulations for the first three quarters of a mile of the straight, the course then running downhill for a furlong before climbing to the line, it is galloping in character and favours big, long-striding sorts. As with the Rowley Mile course, ability to see out the trip thoroughly is essential.
FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket (July) show 193-519 for 37.19% (-47.65) so around +5% above the national average. All six categories score at between 35% and 42%.
TRAINERS: Our top 4 trainers have 15 runners between them and they must provide multiple winners.
Owen Burrows (20%) is in fine form and scoring at 33% he runs TAMALUK 7.00. As we go to post Ralph Beckett (17%) has joined the cold list and currently 0-30 over the past 7 days. He has 7 runners tomorrow at 4 different courses and we doubt he will be 0-37 at the end of play.
JOCKEYS: Rob Havlin (15%) has 4 rides including MANILA MIST 5.50, FULL REGALIA 6.25, DARK KESTREL 7.35 & PEACE MAN 8.45
William Buick (22%) must be followed again tomorrow. It is generally reported (including Timeform), that he rides 26% on this course - that is incorrect and should be disregarded! The last 5-years shows him 46-166 for 28% or 27.71% to be exact! The 2% differential is huge in real terms. Only Frankie Dettori has won more races on this racecourse than him. He has a full book of 7 rides and they include MOONFIRE 5.15, SWING TO THE STARS 5.50, BEAUTIFUL SUMMER 6.25, GRAND LIBYA 7.00, HARRY MAGNUS 7.35, STAR GUEST 8.10 & FIRST SIGHT 8.45
OWNERS: With 68 winners Godolphin (24%) dominate the racing scene at the headquarters of racing courtesy of trainer Charlie Appleby. Their total is more than the next top 10 owners put together. They have 5 runners tomorrow all of which are trained by Charlie Appleby, see below.
Cheveley Park Stud (16%) are 23% at the course and have a runner tomorrow in FULL REGALIA 6.25 and trained by J & T Gosden. This looks a hot race.
Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum (19%) has a single runner also with THE PARENT 8.45 and trained by Richard Hannon. Jockey Sam Hitchcott rides and is 0-69 over a period of 152 days or 7-246 for 3% over the past 5 years. Words like 'conducive and not' spring to mind.
RED FLAG: Trainer Charlie Appleby has a huge national average of 29% yet still scores at 31% at the Newmarket July Course. He has 4 runners tomorrow including DAZZLING STAR 5.15, BEAUTIFUL SUMMER 6.25, STAR GUEST 8.10 & FIRST SIGHT 8.45. The trainer did not have a great Ascot and is 6-27 for 22% over the past 14 days so 7% down on his national average. His June figures show 9-43 for 21% whilst his May figures were worse 12-65 for 18% totalling 21-108 for 19% so 10% down on his national average. We are expecting an upswing shortly. By the way his combination figures with William Buick show 244-788 for 31% over the past 5-years!

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill - you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face - Jason Weaver |
