COURSE: Left handed, galloping with few undulations. One of the fairest courses in the country, though its galloping nature does suit the big, long-striding type. The chase course is regarded as being fairly stiff, though the casualty rate is no more than average compared to all GB tracks. Leaders are rarely overhauled on the chase run-in for all it often looks as though they might be, especially from the elbow. The ground can vary from chase course to hurdles course, with the latter sometimes more testing.
FAVOURITES: Over the past 5-years winning favourites show 114-294 for 38.78% (-21.81) so almost +6% above the national average. Winning favourites in handicaps score at 52% against 29% of those winning handicap favourites and a differential of 23%. Best category is non-handicap winning favourites who register 59%, worst category is handicap chasers at 27%.
TRAINERS: Nicky Henderson (22%) has his horses in good form over the past fortnight (with the exception of First Street who ran a stinker) showing 11-35 for 31% and he has 6 runners at Newbury today and looks certain to score at least once! His runners include BRAVE JEN 11.55, JINGKO BLUE 1.05, JEU DES CHAMPS 1.05, JET POWERED 1.40, UNDER CONTROL 2.15 & DUSART 2.50
Nigel Twiston-Davies (15%) has 4 runners including MANIMOLE 11.55, WONDER OF THE SEAS 1.05, UNCLE BERT 1.40 & MASTER CHEWY 3.25 and a couple with real chances.
JOCKEYS: James Bowen apart we have 4 hot jockeys and 16 rides in Harry Cobden (23%), Charlie Deutsche (14%), Sam Twiston-Davies (15%) and Jonjo O'Neill Junior (16%) and these 5 jockeys look likely to clean up!
COLD LIST JOCKEY: Adam Wedge (13%) has joined the cold list but conversely riding well. He now stands at 0-32 over 14 days but 8 of those have finished second - a few at big prices. He has 3 rides today and whilst we cannot see a winner (so 0-35) he will come off the list sooner rather than later and worth noting his rides from here!
OWNERS: J P McManus (17%) has 14 runners today at prices between 13/8 and 100/1. He has 1 runner at Newbury and probably his best chance of a winner in UNDER CONTROL 2.15 (at 13/8).
Louisville Syndicate Elite (14%) have a runner in ZANZA 2.50. Need to forgive his last 2 runs but likes the course (5 wins from 9 runs and +£101,145 in prizemoney) if finding some old form.
RED FLAG: James Bowen (13%) has had an awful time since he broke his arm in February then missing out on some good Cheltenham Festival rides for Nicky Henderson. He has been in serious need of a pick-up, and today he has a great chance to get back to his previous best with 5 rides (3 with winning chances)! His rides include BRAVE JEN 11.55, JINGKO BLUE 1.05, JET POWERED 1.40, UNDER CONTROL 2.15 & DUSART 2.50 and we sense an upturn in his fortunes are imminent!
This season (2023/2024) he shows just 7-94 for 7% (-55.01) made up of 0-4 (September), 2-29 (October), 5-59 (November) & 0-2 (December). In context he scored 74-388 for 19% (+52.31) and £960,334 in prizemoney in season 2021/2022 so +6% above his national average.
BY THE WAY: Is there a national hunt jockey riding in the UK better than Harry Cobden? He has gone to another level this year and his 2 winners at the course emphasised how well he is riding. Cannot see an obvious winner today but no doubt he will be in the mix.

It’s among the fairest courses in the country and you get few hard-luck stories. There’s plenty of time during a race, with two very long straights and two sweeping bends, and you don’t often get too much shimmying or jockeying for position. If you’ve got the right horse, everything seems to happen nice and smoothly. The fences are very fair and, although the cross-fence used to claim a lot of victims, it’s nowhere near as bad now. Newbury is a great place for a novice and, unlike Cheltenham say, where the fences can be tricky for inexperienced horses, it’s really straightforward - Mick Fitzgerald |
