The reality of betting was spelled out by the wonderful New England philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect." Since the inception of The Racing Horse in June 2011 it has never used the word luck in the context of a winning or losing bet, and as long as it exists it NEVER will! |
RED FLAG: The first race on the card at Newbury is a Maiden for 2yos open to colts, geldings and fillies and there are 8 trainers involved. The trainers have varying degrees of success with this age group on Turf and we have a cursory look at them. We record this age group showing strike rate and their level stake profit and losses to a £1 stake. Ollie Sangster 18% (-13.39), Clive Cox 17% (+159.61), Andrew Balding 16% (+54.73), Eve Johnson-Houghton 16% (-14.23), Dominic Ffrench-Davis 15% (-36.37), Richard Hannon 12% (-218.09), Brian Meehan (9%) (-46.17), Richard Hughes 9% (-103.81). Are these numbers a surprise to members and do they contain value? Maybe, maybe not, we need contextual information! Ollie Sangster: 1-1 100% +4.50 Andrew Balding: 13-77 17% +115.98 Dominic Ffrench-Davis: 1-7 14% -2.67 Richard Hannon: 25-187 13% -42.46 Clive Cox: 8-61 13% -4.25 Richard Hughes: 3-36 8% -15.00 Brian Meehan: 2-27 7% -10.67 Eve Johnson-Houghton: 1-41 2% -26.00

| There aren’t many fairer courses than Newbury, which is big and galloping, but, probably due to the woodland on the far side, it can sometimes ride a good bit softer down the back straight than it does in the home straight. There’s very little draw bias on the straight track and there’s no wonder so many trainers want to send their classy horses there. The one tricky start is the one up in the spur (the round 1m) and that can prove draw-dependent. Otherwise, you get very few hard-luck stories at Newbury - Jason Weaver |
