Racecourse Templates Explained

National Averages Explained

CONFIGURATION: Left handed, galloping. The round course is an elongated oval track, just over twelve furlongs in extent, with a run-in of nearly half a mile, those that commit for home early in the straight often proving vulnerable in the closing stages, this due to the steady climb to the finish. The camera angle in the straight makes it one of the trickiest course in the country for in-running bettors as it's head-on from two furlongs out to inside the last. The highest course in the country, with no watering, so the ground can get very firm during a dry spell.

Bath races are usually run at a true gallop and, sometimes, horses start getting a bit too competitive a long way out. The sharp home turn makes it almost a specialist’s track and you see plenty of runners struggling around it. But, if you’re on one that rails and is fleet of foot, that bend can be a good point to grab an advantage, by turning the taps on while others are having trouble. The finish is quite stiff, so you need to get home, but you would love to be on a front-runner that handles the ups and downs (Jason Weaver).

FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Bath over the last 5 years show 223-658 for 34% (-18.21) so a strike rate just above the national average. Best category are 2yos in non-handicaps who show 36-79 for 46% (+2.97), whilst worst category are 3yos in handicaps who score 53-170 for 31% (-24.99).

TRAINERS: Leading trainer at the course is Tony Carroll (10%) albeit based on volume, though he scores +3% above his national average. At Bath this year, he shows 10-34 for a big 29% (+19.85). He has 5 runners including EQUION & FORESEEN 2.25, MY GENGHIS 3.25, UP THE ANTI 3.55 and SUB THIRTEEN 4.25. Should go close to winning a race, stop at a winner?

Michael and David Easterby (9%) send 2 horses down to Bath from their North Yorkshire stables, a distance of 234 miles, and they might be worth processing. They run YORKIES DREAM 1.25 & I NEED YOUR LOVE 2.55. This training combination have only sent one horse to Bath before, both to be ridden by Jack Garrity, who has only ridden 3 horses at this course before and recorded no placings.

Clive Cox (14%) had a winner last week but has also recorded 4 second places in the last 8 days. He scores a big 27% at Bath, so +13% above his national average and runs the 2yo Ardad colt and last time out winner THISONESFORYOU 12.55 to be ridden by cold list jockey William Cox. The trainer is 15-95 for 16% (+60.95) with his 2yos this year.

JOCKEYS: None of the top 5 jockeys at Bath have a ride tomorrow. There are 5 cold jockeys riding at the course tomorrow, they include William Cox (51), Dougie Costello (47), Jonny Peate (38), Oliver Searle (25) & Rhys Clutterbuck (20). Collectively, they score 0-181.

Toby Moore is a 17-year-old apprentice jockey and the son of champion jockey Ryan Moore. He rode his first professional winner at Kempton Park yesterday onboard the Charlie Appleby trained Valdorcia. This was just his 6th ride. Today he has 2 rides for his grandfather on PLATINUM PRINCE 1.55 & BIG BARD 4.25). The teenager has now emulated his father, uncles Jamie and Josh – who were Grade 1-winning jockeys over jumps – and aunt Hayley. It will be interesting to see how he gets on. One imagines he will be under a little bit of pressure, even if the camp deny it...

OWNERS: Top owner is trainer Adrian Wintle (11%) and he scores 23% at Bath, so +12%. He is currently on the cold list showing 0-44 over the past 46 days and as an owner runs RADIO STAR 2.55. This horse was previously with Ollie Sangster and recorded 0-12. The trainer also runs the 8yo course winner DIAMONDSINTHESAND 4.25. This one has won 5 times from 54 starts.

Wedgewood Estate (11%) score 27% at Bath so +16% above their national average, and they run the 6yo and top weight MY GENGHIS 3.25 in first time blinkers for trainer Tony Carroll, William Carson rides.

GREEN FLAG: Our templates always provides pertinence, context and relevance, and for this meeting we notice Gary and Josh Moore (10%) send 6 horses from their Lower Beeding, West Sussex stables to Bath (112-miles). I cannot remember them sending a number like this to a single Flat Racecourse before. Their runners include 1.55: PLATINUM PRINCE (Toby Moore who claims 7lb), 2.25: GONE ROGUE (Tom Queally), 3.25: BATED BREEZE (Rob Hornby) & MISTER SANDMAN (Tom Queally), 3.55: VOODOO RAY (Rhys Clutterbuck) and 4.25: BIG BARD (Toby Moore who claims 7lb). To date the stable score just 2-29 for 7% at Bath, so -3% below their national average. But, within those figures are 4 second places meaning 6-29 for 21% finish in the first two places, suggesting their horses have been sent to Bath to win and not school!
