CHEPSTOW WINNERS (Wednesday 5 November 2025)

FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Chepstow over the past 5 years show 184-481 for 38.25% and a level stake loss of -£38.17 to a £1 stake at SP. This strike rate is at least 5% compared to the national average. Best category are winning favourites in non-handicap hurdles 70-137 for 51% (+£5.77), whilst the worst category are winning favourites in handicaps 37-126 for 29% (-£24.87). The margins between these categories amount to a 22% swing in strike rate and a £30.64 difference in returns. It is absolutely essential for bettors to be aware of such figures.

TRAINERS: Paul Nicholls (23%) is the top trainer at the course, but scores -2% below his national average and a loss of -£83.12. Despite the common perception that he thrives here, the figures suggest otherwise. His record does improve when Harry Cobden takes the ride, but overall the data challenges the consensus. He has just one runner tomorrow in NECRONAUT 12.59 for Colm Donlon but ran poorly here last time out, after drifting wildly, another watching brief is advised.

Evan Williams (11%) has 5 runners tomorrow but scores just 10% at the course, which is not conducive to our style of betting. The last 14 days shows him 2-32 for just 6% which further tempers enthusiasm.

JOCKEYS: None of the top jockeys at Chepstow are in attendance tomorrow. Charlie Deutsch (13%) has 5 rides including KNEAD A WIN 12.24 (Sam Thomas), JURACIQUE 1.34 (Venetia Williams), ANALIESE 2.09 (Mel Rowley), GIRLS BEST FRIEND 2.44 (Venetia Williams) & NOBODY TOLD ME 3.19 (Thomas Faulkner). The market will be informative about his rides...

OWNERS: Walters Plant (21%) are the new top owners and celebrated with a fabulous win double at the last meeting with trainer Sam Thomas training both! They have another runner tomorrow of interest in KNEAD TO WIN 12.24 once again trained by Thomas.

GREEN FLAG: Harry Derham (23%) is on a massive upward curve and he runs 2 including LE FRIMEUR (J J Slevin) 12.24 & LASKO DES OBEAUX (Paul O'Brien) 12.59. His first runner is for powerful owners Munir & Souede and this 4yo Gemix gelding won his sole PTP start easily last March on good to yielding race. J J Slevin rides and significant he travels over from Ireland to ride in a £4,000 race and this represents just his third ride for the trainer, the message is clear and we will be looking for a price and one of two wagers we will be placing! It will be one of those situations where we need to ask ourself - what is value? Our first thoughts suggests he has KNEAD TO WIN to beat?

Our second wager will be LASKO DES OBEAUX a 4yo Bathyrhon who was a decent second on his sole PTP start on soft ground. Interesting to note the sire, though German bred, did his better work on good ground. However, the dam Shifra, produced Haddex Des Obeaux who loved testing conditions, as did Elisa Des Obeaux and Joie Des Obeaux. The trainer can also be trusted to race to have chosen this race for his debutant.

The trainer has scored 7-28 for 25% at the course. It might be worth keeping an eye on the trainer and jockey combo of Paul O'Brien who are currently 97-402 for 24% and £1,041,070 in prize money. With the century mark now imminent, we’re tracking their progress and intend to stake on their 100th winner.

TRH missed the bigger price on TEDDY BLUE 3.15 Ascot for the O'Brien and Derham combination given this is their only runner, if 5/1 or 11/2 became available, we will stake each way on this horse who carries just 10st 6lb and looks certain to go close!

Mick Fitzgerald talks about Chepstow Racecourse

Record times for Chepstow are very quick, which shows how slick it can be when the ground is fast, but horses can finish strung out like washing when it gets soft. Punters really must take note of conditions then, if they’re having a bet, because horses with stamina limitations can get home when the going is right for them, while it can be a real slog when it’s heavy. The other things to consider seriously are the undulations and the downhill run from the last. If you walk round the course, for example, you’ll be aware that, from several places out in the country, you can’t see the stands. The run-in, on the other hand, is quite steeply downhill, very quick on fast ground, and that’s why you often see horses make a mistake at the final jump - Mick Fitzgerald
