Each racecourse has its own quirks…

Great Britain boasts 59 licensed racecourses, and not one is the same. Apart from Chelmsford City and Ffos Las—both modern tracks opened in the 2000s—the rest have histories stretching back nearly a century or more. Each course has its own quirks: the bends, the cambers, the gradients, the undulations, whether it runs left-handed, right-handed, or even both, plus altitude and surface differences. This variety is unmatched anywhere else in the racing world.

A classic example is between Catterick and Beverley over the 5f distance. Catterick is downhill and sharp, suiting nimble speed horses, while Beverley is uphill and testing, often turning sprints into stamina battles. They are indeed poles apart in every respect!

But here’s the question: do we really take this diversity into account when placing our bets? From experience, the answer is often no. Even seasoned pundits can overlook how much a course’s character influences a race. Professional bettors may factor it in, but casual punters usually don’t.

And yet, in sport, the smallest margins make the biggest difference. A winning bet or a losing one can hinge on details as fine as a horse’s comfort with a particular track. Too often, attention is fixed on the horse’s form, the trainer, the jockey, and the odds—while the course itself barely gets a mention.

If we accept that every racecourse has its own personality, then it makes sense to treat it as either a help or a hindrance. If the course looks likely to work against your bet, the smart move is to hold fire and wait for a better opportunity.

And remember — our Racecourse Templates have already factored in some fascinating aggregates and insights across Britain’s tracks. They’re designed to help bettors see beyond the headline form and make smarter, course‑aware decisions.
