COURSE: Record times for Chepstow are very quick, which shows how slick it can be when the ground is fast, but horses can finish strung out like washing when it gets soft. Punters really must take note of conditions then, if they’re having a bet, because horses with stamina limitations can get home when the going is right for them, while it can be a real slog when it’s heavy. The other things to consider seriously are the undulations and the downhill run from the last. If you walk round the course, for example, you’ll be aware that, from several places out in the country, you can’t see the stands. The run-in, on the other hand, is quite steeply downhill, very quick on fast ground, and that’s why you often see horses make a mistake at the final jump (Mick Fitzgerald)

FAVOURITES: Over the past 5 seasons winning favourites have scored 192-502 for 38.25% (43.85) so around +5% above the national average. There is a clear edge to be had at Chepstow for those with the patience. In non-handicap hurdles, winning favourites show 74-153 for a massive 52% and a level stake profit of +£7.03 to a £1 stake at SP. Just a modicum of filtration could improve those figures significantly. Today the first two races are non-handicaps!

TRAINERS: Evan Williams (11%) continues his search for a 100th Chepstow winner and today looks the day with Juby Ball. But, he has 6 runners and a few of them have each way chances if not winning. His runners include FRANCKY BLUE 1.40, JUBY BALL 2.40, PRINCESS KERI 3.10, HURRICAN HIGHWAY 3.45 MUMBLES 4.20 & KLIC BOUM 4.55. Today could be an excellent day for the stable.

JOCKEYS: There are 3 jockeys riding at Chepstow today who are in fabulous form over the past month or so and represent an obvious angle into the meeting. We have logged their recent numbers to show the extent of their form. It is reasonable to expect multiple winners and near misses come from this trio who include:

Ben Jones (16%) is 19-62 for 31% (-5.00), He rides this course as well as anyone and scores 23-109 for 21% (+60.610) so +5% above his national average. He has 4 rides today and looks likely to give Evan Williams his 100th Chepstow winner!

Harry Skelton (21%) shows 16-59 for 27% (+10.73) and has 3 rides, each with a winning chance, we think a win double is on the cards at least and playing a version of stop at a winner.

Sean Bowen (21%) 19-88 for 22% (+16.00) has 6 rides and also looks good for a winner.

OWNERS: Fittingly, William Rucker (9%) is taken to provide his trainer Evan Williams with an 100th Chepstow winner. Surprisingly, at least for us, is that the Ruckers have provided only 20 of those winners, we had thought more than that. Following these owners at Chepstow show a profit of +3.96 to a £1 stake, and we also note they have scored 21 second places and 19 third places. Full figures show 20-138 for 14% (+3.96) and winning prize money of £284,813. Their runners include JUBY BALL 2.40 & HURRICANE HIGHWAY 3.45 and a win and a place beckons.

GREEN FLAG: It is hard to explain the moderate to poor 11% strike rate of trainer Dan Skelton at Chepstow. This figure is a massive 5% below his national average. In fact, of the 41 UK Racecourse his strike rate is only lower at two other racecourses including Ascot. Today however, he looks good for a win double at least from his 7 runners which include BOSSMAN JACK, I HEARD A RUMOUR, HOLEHEARTEDLY 1.40, MERCI MAM & DREAM'S KA 2.10, JASMIN DE COTTE 3.45 & DELTA BLUES BELLE 4.55. TRH is playing a form of stop at a winner and expect to make a profit from the meeting! Getting perceived value is likely to be difficult, but that is the task!
