WHAT are RACECOURSE TEMPLATES?

UNDERSTANDING NATIONAL AVERAGES

CONFIGURATION: Left handed, galloping. The straight mile course is undulating throughout. One of the fairest courses in the country, though its galloping nature makes it ideal for the big, long-striding type, and the track becomes testing in inclement weather. Whilst the majority of the action on the straight course usually takes place on the stand rail, those who choose to come down the centre of the track instead can find themselves at an advantage.

Newbury rarely produces fluke results and is trusted for debuting expensive, inexperienced horses. With minor undulations, no sharp or unbalancing turns it makes Newbury one of the fairest tests of a horse’s ability in Britain. 

THE DRAW: There aren’t many fairer courses than Newbury, which is big and galloping, but, probably due to the woodland on the far side, it can sometimes ride a good bit softer down the back straight than it does in the home straight. There’s very little draw bias on the straight track and there’s no wonder so many trainers want to send their classy horses there. The one tricky start is the one up in the spur (the round 1m) and that can prove draw-dependent. Otherwise, you get very few hard-luck stories at Newbury - Jason Weaver

FAVOURITES: Newbury may be a fair track, but it is far from punter friendly. Over the past five years, favourites have returned 188-523 for 30.18% which is almost 3% below the national average. The underperformance is even more pronounced in Maiden and Novice races: where one might reasonably expect favourite strike‑rates approaching 40% or more, Newbury delivers only 33%, a significant shortfall for categories that are usually more reliable. Note, that 4yos and older only win 23% of winning favourites win in handicaps.

TRAINERS: Richard Hannon (11%), William Haggas (22%), Andrew Balding (16%) and Ralph Beckett (18%) have 16 entries between them and it is reasonable to expect winners from this quartet. Hannon has 7 runners so will be disappointed if one of his runners does not win or go close,

JOCKEYS: Only 2 of our top 5 course jockeys have rides here for Saturday, but both are of immense interest. William Buick (24%) rode 3 winners on Friday and looked good in the process. On Saturday he has 5 rides including FURTHUR 1.37, NABATI 2.12, MR SWIVEL 2.47, JASSAS 3.20 & CASTLE ROCK 3.55. Worth pointing out to members is the fact he goes to Leicester on Monday for just one ride on the 2yo Dubawi colt LAST HORIZON 3.02 for Charlie Appleby, heavily suggesting he is ready to win on debut. Cannot imagine him going there just to school the horse. By the way, over last 14 days the jockey shows 14-34 for 41% so in tremendous form!

Rossa Ryan (17%) has a full book of rides including STARLUST 1.02 (Ralph Beckett), INSANITY 1.37 (Alan King), ADAAY OF SCARLETT 2.12 (Hugh Palmer), GONNA FLY 2.47 (Ralph Beckett), SHOWMASTER 3.20 (Clive Cox), SHAMAN CHAMPION 3.55 (Clive Cox) & CROSSBAR 4.30 (Clive Cox). It will hard keeping him out of the winner's enclosure though we recognise most of his rides are at bigger prices. Interesting he rode a winner for Clive Cox on Friday's card, and Saturday he rides 3 more for the trainer.

OWNERS: Godolphin (28%) are top owners at this course but strike -6% below their national average. They have 3 runners including NABATI 2.12, JASSAS 3.20 & CASTLE ROCK 3.55 all to be ridden by William Buick. We green-flagged Godolphin for Friday's meeting and advised members to follow their runners - they scored 3 WINNERS! You're welcome!
