The Irish raiders had won 6 of the last 7 runnings and we had to respect the Willie Mullins runner Buildmeupbuttercup but we told our members "Trainer Ian Williams runs two in the race and both are interesting at a price." The Grand Visir was easily available at 33/1 and so was Time To Study at 20/1. Here was the full result at advised prices:

If our members will allow us some self-praise we nominated this top weight in testing ground and this brave call was rewarded! The Grand Visir defied top weight in tremendously game fashion and handed his trainer a first-ever Royal Ascot winner. He'd clearly benefited considerably for his stable/seasonal debut at Newmarket 10 days previously. This softer ground was no doubt more to his liking and the son of Frankel took his form to a new level over this marathon distance. The Cesarewitch back at Newmarket in October is the obvious target from here.

We have no news of any member taking the 33/1 at this moment yet alone the Exacta, Tricast or Trifecta.

Our Racecourse Template, Racing Trends and Betting Advice is an assemblage that works and in particular to big meetings with big fields and tricky handicaps. The filtration of contenders from pretenders is key and we could easily shut up shop now with a 28pt win, but we will try and find more winners throughout the week. Not sure where we will end up but we refer you to our work last year

Finally and though a little obvious, we talked about the main protagonists on our Homepage and said "It is our belief that 4 of the top 5 trainers (GOSDEN, APPLEBY, STOUTE, Balding or Cox) and 3 of the top 4 jockeys (DETTORI, DOYLE, MOORE) will register at least one winner each. Aidan O'Brien will obviously have winners and surely William Haggas (who has a bad record at Royal Ascot) will go close if not winning a race."

Trainer Aidan O'Brien recorded a win double at 15/8 and 10/1 and William Haggas with Addeybb 5/1 (7/1 advised) are already on the scoresheet whilst Ryan Moore with 2 wins and James Doyle with 1 have scored also, this leaves John Gosden and Michael Stoute with jockey Frankie Dettori still to register, it will happen!

Day 2 and the ground is now officially soft with more rain predicted, so we have to adjust especially with the draw bias. We have gone against the draw with New Graduate and that could be a big mistake. The son of New Approach was put up 15lb for his five-length dismissal of subsequent winner Kaeso but has worked like a high-class performer at Newmarket since then. Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Manana, said: "He couldn't do any more than win as he did at Ripon and he's a very good horse who could be better than a handicapper. One negative could be his draw in stall one as the last two winners have come from 22 and 26. We can't do anything about the draw but we have a good jockey on board in Frankie Dettori and it just depends where the pace is."

Our Pacafi today is Magical and she runs in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (Group 1) and will have conditions to suit.

Between 4mm and 8mm of rain is expected to fall before racing on Wednesday and the going description is likely to remain soft.
