WINNING FAVOURITES: Given the amount of poor quality of racing at Wolverhampton, we are continually surprised as to the high strike rates of winning favourites, especially in non-handicap races! If we asked members who are the top 4 trainers at the course over the past 5 years could you nominate them? They are Tony Carroll, David Evans, Michael Appley & David Loughnane. Just 2 winners separate the first 3 and 6 winners the top 4.

We have some huge numbers from this course, and this road map he helps us in framing a race. The last 5-year figures show 1056-2939 for 35.93% and a level stake loss of -189.60 so a strike rate of around 3% above the national average. Best category for strike rate and profit are 4yo+ in non-handicaps showing 97-199 for 49% (+19.17). Winning non-handicap favourites across the board score 376-834 for 45%. Worst category is 4yo+ in handicaps with 389-1246 for 31% (-104.37).

TRAINERS: Leading trainer Tony Carroll (10%) has 3 runners tomorrow but there is a better class of trainer at tomorrow's meeting, and this means the lessors might be squeezed. Roger Varian (20%) has 3 competitive runners, Ralph Beckett (17%) has 2, Andrew Balding (15%) has 1 and so does Sir Mark Prescott (17%). Richard 'Volume' Hannon (11%) brings 5 runners.

JOCKEYS: Luke Morris (9%) is the top jockey at the course over the last 5 years and has 4 rides on Monday. He is currently on a big losing run of 51 and 1-55 for 2% over the past 14 days.

Another jockey in the doldrums is Richard Kingscote (14%) who scores 1-20 for 5% over the past 14 days, he has 3 rides, but we notice he has 6 good looking rides at Kempton on Wednesday and made a mental note. Talking of doldrums Andrea Atzeni comes for just one ride on TAWAFAQ 6.30 and will be trying his hardest to get back on the ladder. He has not been happy recently and been riding in Italy to find a winner, only 7 UK winners for him in October from 77 rides for 9%, no winners yet for November.

Conversely, Kevin Stott is in great form and the last month or so shows him 25-105 for 24% so 10% up on his national average. David Probert (11%) has 5 rides tomorrow, cannot see an obvious winner but that might not stop him!

WOLVERHAMPTON RACECOURSE - JASON WEAVER

Wolverhampton’s 5f, 7f and extended 1m starts can be tricky from a jockey’s point of view, because they’re very much draw-dependent. It’s a big advantage being among the low, left-hand numbers. The 1m 4f start can also be a slight problem, but at least from there you’ve got a longer trip to get sorted out. Nobody went round the inside in the early days and, while I’m not sure it’s a disadvantage to be there now, most jocks still shy away from that rail. It’s a tight course, but well laid-out and very fair.
