CHEPSTOW CONFIGURATION: Left handed, undulating. Oval-shaped track, about two miles in extent, with a run-in of 5 furlongs. All races at up to a mile are run on the straight course. While not an out-and-out galloping course, owing to the pronounced undulations, the track puts the emphasis on stamina almost regardless of ground.
FAVOURITES: It's official, Chepstow is a punter-friendly racecourse and we have the receipts. Over the past 5 years winning favourites at the course show 154-398 for 38.69% so +5% above the national average. Note, all 3 categories (age-groups) of winning favourites in handicaps produce a profit to level stakes and score well above the national average of 29%, something very unusual in a Racecourse Template! Best category for winning strike rate are 3yo winning favourites in non-handicaps who show 25-47 for 53% (-3.31).
BY THE WAY: Of the 35 races ran this current year the favourites continue to win more than their share showing 15-35 for 43% (+0.11). The advice is to take a long look at the favourite before opposing.
TRAINERS: Leading trainer at the course Tony Carroll has a national average of just 9% whilst scoring 10% at Chepstow. He has 6 runners including SUB THIRTEEN 5.15, LA MER GRISE 5.50, NEPTUNE LEGEND 6.25, VERONA STAR 7.00, BOUJEE GOLD & ROYAL TOAST 7.35.
Second top trainer at the course is Rod Millman (12%) and he has a couple of interesting runners in BAMA LAMA 6.25 & MULLINS BEACH 8.10.
JOCKEYS: From our leader board only William Cox (5%) has rides at Chepstow on Friday. His 4 rides include CAPTAIN CESS 5.50, HOWZAK 6.25, PORTERINTHEJUNGLE 7.35 & ADRIAN 8.45
Luke Morris (9%) could be the jockey to follow, he has 5 rides including GLITTERATI 5.50, BANTRY 7.00, FACT OR FABLE 7.35, RINNOVATI 8.10 & WALTER HARTRIGHT 8.45
Jack Doughty (14%) has made a great start to his career since December 2013 and June saw him score 10-47 for 21% (+13.44). His 14% national average is quite something and he has 5 interesting rides again tomorrow including SUB THIRTEEN 5.15, BAMA LAMA 6.25, ROYAL TOAST 7.35, MULLINS BEACH 8.10 & LHEBAYEB 8.45, another winner beckons.
OWNERS: The Cross Racing Club (10%) are the top owners at the course over the past 5 years albeit from a small sample, and they run the 5yo ROMANOVICH 7.00 who is 1 win from 4 at the course, trained by John O'Shea (8%) and ridden by William Carson. NON-RUNNER.

Chepstow takes a fair bit of getting. Because it’s so up hill and down dale, stamina has to come into play and it’s also worth noting that the straight is quite long, meaning that some horses start to race a lot earlier than is ideal. If you’re on one that wants to make the running, for example, you’ll often get a few keen to take you on earlier than you might like, so patience is vital for a jockey. Long-striding horses can often go well on the straight track but, as it’s quite stiff, they definitely need to get home - Jason Weaver |
