FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket (July) show 191-548 for 34.84% (-71.51) so above the national average. Best strike rate category are 2yo winning favourites in non-handicaps showing 49-112 for 44% and a level stake profit of +0.40. Worst category are 4yo+ in handicaps with 35-120 for 29% (-15.43).
TRAINERS: Charlie Appleby is unique when it comes to the Newmarket Racecourses. He has a national average of 28% and somehow manages to match that huge figure at the headquarters of racing!
Rowley: 70-247 for 28% (+6.28) July: 45-160 for 28% (-9.07) Total: 115-407 for 28% (-2.79)
His figures above show it is possible to back his horses blind at these two courses and break even. With just a modicum of filtration a profit is enabled. Worth reminding ourselves these figures are net after multiple entries, irrespective of jockey bookings and draw bias. Appleby knows what horses are suited to this course better than any other and yes, this includes the great John Gosden! Appleby has 7 entries including WALK OF STARS 1.50. MYSTERIOUS NIGHT 2.25, GLOBAL STORM & YIBIR 3.35, ALBAHR 4.10, NOBLE DYNASTY 4.40 & ECHO POINT 4.40
JOHN GOSDEN: Mathematics, context and relevance is everything in racing and we only show the figures of Team Gosden to show the dominance/skill/brilliance of Appleby.
Rowley: 52-281 for 19% (-46.83) July: 41-192 for 21% (-17.41) Total: 93-473 for 19% (-64.24)
There are no other trainers in the UK who can compare to Charlie Appleby and John Gosden, so when horses are entered for a Newmarket Race our first task is to check out their runners a couple of days before racing. Gosden has 2 runners tomorrow in MOSTAHDAF 3.35 & MIGHTY ULYSSES 4.10.
OTHER TRAINERS: Though our top 2 trainers look likely to dominate proceedings on Thursday, we note Aidan O'Brien (12%) makes the trip from Ireland (278 miles) with 2 runners. William Haggas (23%) has 3 entries. The four mentioned look almost certain to win most of the 7 races.
COLD LIST TRAINERS: There are three good trainers with bigger losing runs, they are James Ferguson (16%) who is 0-48 over 69 days, David Loughnane (11%) is 0-32 over 25 days and David Simcock (13%) is 0-28 over 32 days. Losing entries from these three trainers total 108 and a high figure, they have 4 runners between them tomorrow.
JOCKEYS: Ryan Moore (18%) and William Buick (21%) have a full set of 7 rides whilst James Doyle (20%) has 5 and Tom Marquand (14%) has 4 rides. A number of winners from this quartet beckons!
JOCKEY COLD LIST: Hayley Turner makes our jockey cold list, she is currently 0-23 and has 1 ride.
OWNERS: Godolphin reign supreme at Newmarket! They have a national average of 24% yet score 27% at the course, and this strike rate includes multiple runners in the same race, and those from different trainers. The suggestion is if we are not backing a fancied Godolphin runner we are not backing against them!
BY THE WAY: Frankie Dettori rides for J & T Gosden tomorrow and what a good ride it is on MIGHTY ULYSSES 4.10. This ride will get 100% concentration you can be sure of that! He also has a ride for Ralph Beckett but not expected to trouble the judge.
BY THE WAY 2: Jamie Spencer (14%) is on a losing run of 28 over 27 days and this run must end sooner rather than later. He has just one ride at Doncaster tomorrow on FRESH HOPE for Charlie Fellowes at around 13/8. Spencer is 19-108 for 18% (+9.03) at the course over the past 5 years. We are following the jockey from here...

| JASON WEAVER - NEWMARKET JULY RACECOURSE
The major difference between the Rowley Mile and the July Course is that, whereas the former is uphill all the way to the line, the latter levels off - almost falling away - after an initial climb. It’s a lovely track, every bit as nice for jockeys as it is for summer racegoers, but, when you’re riding, you have to be on weather-watch, as sometimes there’s a faster strip on the far side, near the hospitality marquees. The long straight means it’s a very fair course, with no pace bias, and it’s ideally suited to class horses. |
