WINNING FAVOURITES: Given the amount of the poor quality of racing at Wolverhampton, we are continually surprised as to the high strike rates of winning favourites, especially in non-handicap races! Our only conclusion, whilst particularly accepting the remarks of Jason Weaver below regarding tricky draws over certain distances, is the wisdom of the crowd factor in regular play with horses they know! The big sample size at this course cannot be fluked - they are real. Over the past 5-years winning favourites at Wolverhampton show 1077-3008 for 35.80% which is close to 4% above the national average and a significant raise. They do show a loss of -194.51 to SP.

Non-handicap winning favourites score at 45% and a base number from which to work from. Best category is the 4yo+ in non-handicaps showing 97-200 for 49% and a profit of +18.17 to SP, whilst worst category is 4yo+ in handicaps scoring 396-1276 for 31% (-108.08).

TOP TRAINERS: If we asked members who are the top 5 trainers at the course over the past 5 years could they nominate them? They are Tony Carroll, David Evans, Michael Appley, David Loughnane & Antony Brittain. These trainers have national averages of 9% to 11% and reflect the quality of horses in their care and the standard of races they are running in, especially in the handicaps. Four of our top trainers have a total of 15 runners between them and we can expect a winner or two from this grouping and probably at a big price!

Of our premier trainers we always scrutinise the runners of these 4 trainers in a general sense but especially at Wolverhampton:

Charlie Appleby: 34-103 for 33% (-11.30)
Saeed bin Suroor: 30-109 for 28% (-6.95)
William Haggas: 48-176 for 27% (-31.25)
Roger Varian: 43-172 for 25% (-8.86)

COLD TRAINERS:  There are 3 trainers in the doldrums who have runners tomorrow, they include Charlie Wallis (7%) 0-89 over 296 days, Tom Clover (11%) 0-36 & Archie Watson (17%) 0-21

JOCKEYS:  Jim Crowley (19%) does not visit Wolverhampton very often but knows how to ride it scoring at 32%. It is the figures of James Doyle (20%) that are so impressive scoring at 30% and interestingly 10% above that of William Buick (22%) who scores at 20% here!

Jim Crowley: 18-56 for 32% (+5.62)
James Doyle: 49-166 for 30% (+3.73)

COLD JOCKEYS: Jason Watson (13%) is 37 rides since winning over a period of 19 days, he has 4 rides tomorrow and 2 with winning chances.

OWNERS: Only Antony Brittain (8%) from our leader board has a runner at this meeting as an owner. He has 4 as a trainer and they include ANOTHER ANGEL 4.20, YAAHOBBY 4.50, TURBO TIGER 5.20 & GUN SALUTE 6.50. For an 8% national average trainer he is in peak form with 3 winners from his last 6 runners, so another winner beckons from this quartet! He is low grade but has recorded 55 winners from this racecourse over the past 5 years so knows where the winning post is. His November returns of 5-15 for 33% (+37.70) are his best since January 2021.

BY THE WAY: Just a quick recap on the form of Charlie Appleby and his ability. Since the 30 October he has recorded 15-38 for almost 40% (+6.63). With a national average of 29% he sits at the top of UK racing but on the AW, he is so hard to oppose, and we remind members of his last 5 years figures on the surfaces:

Chelmsford	23-83	28%	-32.43
Kempton 59-166	36%	-24.77

WOLVERHAMPTON RACECOURSE - JASON WEAVER

Wolverhampton’s 5f, 7f and extended 1m starts can be tricky from a jockey’s point of view, because they’re very much draw-dependent. It’s a big advantage being among the low, left-hand numbers. The 1m 4f start can also be a slight problem, but at least from there you’ve got a longer trip to get sorted out. Nobody went round the inside in the early days and, while I’m not sure it’s a disadvantage to be there now, most jocks still shy away from that rail. It’s a tight course, but well laid-out and very fair.
