RACECOURSE TEMPLATES explained
What is a NATIONAL AVERAGE?

COURSE: Right handed, oval-shaped course 13f in length with a straight of ½ a mile. Essentially a fair, galloping course which places the emphasis on stamina courtesy of a gradual climb from the home turn. On soft ground the jockeys sometimes tack across to the stand side in the straight and this can lead to horses racing wide apart. The 5f track runs across the main circuit and rises steadily throughout.

FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Sandown over the past 5 years show 189-489 for 38.65 (-2.58).Winning favourites in non-handicaps score 83-173 for 48% and a level stake profit of +£11.66. All age groups in non-handicaps return a profit to level stakes. Winning favourites in handicaps win above the national average, proving Sandown an excellent racecourse for winning favourites.

Tomorrow, our best trainers, jockeys and owners visit the course in force, not leaving much on the table for the lesser lights.

TRAINERS: Charlie Appleby (29%) has 6 entries at Sandown tomorrow and will be looking for a win double at least. Andrew Balding (15%), J & T Gosden (21%) and Michael Stoute (20%) all have 4 runners each, most of which are trained for our top 5 owners at the course, see below.

BY THE WAY: Of Andrew Balding's 4 runners 3 of them were beaten favourites last time out, they are IMPERIAL FIGHTER 3.00, THERAPIST 4.10 & RIBAL 4.40

JOCKEYS: Our best jockeys ride at this meeting, but strange that Tom Marquand (15%) only has 1 ride. His wife Hollie Doyle (15%) also puzzles us, in that her record at the course is poor, she scores 5-64 for just 8% (-39.71), she has 2 rides.

OWNERS: Our top 5 big owners at Sandown have 12 runners between them and we can reasonably expect them to dominate the card. Godolphin (25%) have 6 runners in 4 races at the course tomorrow, all trained by Charlie Appleby, they include LOCAL DYNASTY 1.50, HIGHLAND AVENUE & ADAYAR 2.25, FLYING HONOURSE 3.35, ETERNAL HOPE & QUEEN OF FAIRIES 4.10. Stop at a winner?

Shadwell Estate (24%) have 3 runners in ANMAAT 2.25, MUTASAABEQ 3.00 & TARJAMAH 4.10

Cheveley Park (17%) have 2 runners in POTAPOVA 3.00 & THERAPIST 4.10

Juddmonte (23%) have a single entry with ARREST 3.35

RED FLAG: Paul Cole was British Flat Champion Trainer in 1981. He remains one of Britain’s most successful trainers, sending out 5 Derby winners globally, including the English Derby, Irish Derby, King George, Irish Oaks, St Leger and Ascot Gold Cup. He has flown horses around the world to compete (and win significant prizes); in Dubai, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Istanbul, America, Canada, Hong Kong, Russia, Australia and Japan.  Paul has also been Champion European Trainer four times. He trained Snurge, the first horse ever to win more than £1,000,000 in prize money.

He combined with son Oliver in March 2020. Since then they have secured a 13% national average and their total figures show 59-469 for 13% (-0.02) winning over +£1m in prize money. They send PHYSIQUE 1.50 & SUMO SAM 4.10 to Sandown tomorrow where they show just 1-10 albeit a 50/1 winner! Historically they do not have much success in the first quarter of the year, but they have taken that to another level, and without a winner since October 2022. They are now 0-40 over a period of 180 days. From here, the advice must be to follow them closely in May - they will have winners and probably at big prices. Their best area of success is 2yo winners on Turf where they score 18-97 for 19% (+22.58) with 26 placed runners.

There’s no doubt it’s a big advantage being on the far rail up Sandown’s sprint course and a lot of horses drawn badly, even in medium-sized fields, fail to get into contention. It can be tricky in a finish, too, with a lot happening in the final furlong, and there’s no surprise that it lends itself to front-runners. They always seem to go quick down the back on the round course, and it’s quite a long way from the bottom of the hill to the winning post, but horses really stretch out on that kind final rise to the line - Jason Weaver
