The Racing Horse offers our Newmarket Racecourse Template for Thursday 29 June 2023. There is a 7-race card containing 5 Handicaps and 2 Novice Races. The going is expected to be good, good to firm in places.

Not sure if members acted upon the advice, but another great Kempton last night! We love Kempton!

AC has been in touch, he said: "Just a short email to say thank you for a outstanding template tonight, I've been a member for 92 days now and have found the templates and red flags first class in every way, but tonight i'm speechless, outstanding! brilliant work, again thank you."

UPCOMING RACECOURSE TEMPLATES
Newmarket July (Friday)
Newmarket July (Saturday)

COURSE: The July Course is 2m1f in extent with a right-handed bend at halfway, the first mile being part of the Cesarewitch course, the last the straight Bunbury mile. Notwithstanding the undulations for the first three quarters of a mile of the straight, the course then running downhill for a furlong before climbing to the line, it is galloping in character and favours big, long-striding sorts. As with the Rowley Mile course, ability to see out the trip thoroughly is essential.

FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket (July) show 193-519 for 37.19% (-47.65) so around +5% above the national average. All six categories score at between 35% and 42%.

TRAINERS: There is not much action from our top trainers at the course for this meeting so will have to delve a little further to reach the obvious!

JOCKEYS: James Doyle (19%) goes to Leicester for 4 rides and the hint should be taken given how well he rides this Newmarket course. Oisin Murphy (19%) goes to Salisbury for 5 rides. We talk a little about Andrea Atzeni in our Red Flag Comment.

William Buick (22%) must be followed tomorrow, he will ride at least one winner. It is generally reported (including Timeform), that he rides 26% on this course - that is incorrect and should be disregarded! The last 5-years shows him 46-166 for 28% or 27.71% to be exact! The 2% differential is huge in real terms. Only Frankie Dettori has won more races on this racecourse than him. He has 6 rides and they include EMPIRE OF LIGHT 2.00, SEA MASTER 2.35, CROW'S NEST 3.10, SPRING DAWN 3.45, WILD SIDE 4.55 & BYRON HILL 5.30.

OWNERS: With 68 winners Godolphin (24%) dominate the racing scene at the headquarters of racing courtesy of trainer Charlie Appleby. Their total is more than the next top 10 owners put together. They have just the one entry in a tough race for Thursday, but we expect this owner to be busy on Friday and Saturday where we have genuine interest and stake money standing by.

RED FLAG: Trainer Charlie Appleby has a huge national average of 29% yet still scores at 31% at Newmarket July Course. He has a number of entries over the next few days but just the one on Thursday in SPRING DAWN 3.45. She is a 3yo half-sister to winners Firebird Song (1m-8.6f, including German Listed), Basilicata (6f-1m4f) and Summer's Day (6f); eye-catching second of nine in fillies' maiden at Newmarket (7f) in April 2023; second again behind stablemate English Rose over same C&D in May.

We decided against backing the filly as part of our Charlie Appleby Strategy. The 5/4 or even money looks a bit short against CROWNING & SATIRICAL. This looks a tough race to call and we note the Gosden filly has been working particularly well on the Al Bahathri and the drop back in trip certain to suit! Roger Varian runs GLISTENED for her debut and this complicates matters further! We have been asked what we consider a value price against the Appleby runner, and the answer is we do not know!

Andrea Atzeni (16%) is in the doldrums and has been for a while now. Since his 8-year partnership with Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum ended last year he has simply not recovered in his freelance capacity. This year he has ridden just 21 winners so far, in context he won 77 races in 2022 for a big 20% (+22.61) and £2,132,308 in prize money.

His last 14 days show a miserable 1-26 for 4%. For June he is currently a poor 3-41 for 7% and May he scored just 6-67 for 9%, so a meagre total of 9-108 for 8%. He is far too good to accompany these figures at this time of the year especially. For example, last June he rode 17 winners. Tomorrow he has 4 rides including 2 hot favourites and will be looking for some relief, his rides include CHEEKY BLIMEY 2.00, RESONANCE 3.45, URBAN SPRAWL 4.20 & PISANELLO 4.55. Looking forward from here we imagine a very determined Italian, will he ride confidently? Tomorrow will be an interesting day for him...

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill - you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face - Jason Weaver
