CHEPSTOW CONFIGURATION: Chepstow is a left-handed, undulating, oval course, nearly two miles around with eleven fences to a circuit, a five-furlong home straight and a run-in of 250 yards. Conditions can be very testing. With five fences in the straight, the first part of which is downhill, front runners - or those leading into the straight - do well here, especially over shorter distances, and the fences don't claim the number of casualties that might be expected.

FAVOURITES: Chepstow is a punter friendly racecourse. The last 5 years show 190 winning favourites from 512 races for 37.11% (-43.95) so around +4% above the national average. Non-handicap winning favourites score 94-213 for 44% whilst handicap winning favourites score 96-299 for 32% for a 12% differential.

The first 2 races are Novice Hurdles and could provide the perfect start for favourite backers, given the favourites win at 48% at Chepstow.

BEST CATEGORY: Non-handicap hurdles 69-143 for 48% (-1.64)
WORST CATEGORY: Handicap hurdles 38-129 for 29% (-20.52)

TRAINERS: Venetia Williams (16%) has 2 runners including ECEPARTI & HAUT FOLIN 2.15. The last 14 days show her 1-21 for 5% and there is a suggestion her horses may have trained over. She recorded 5 successive PUs within this time frame (6 in total) and 8 last or last but one placings. Her numbers make for interesting reading:

April 2024	1-14 7% £15,367 -7.00
March 2024	10-69 14% £250,166	-30.98
February 2024	4-49 8% £144,999	-28.92
January 2024	4-49 8% £182,450	-39.20
December 2023	18-65 28% £484,421	+19.84
November 2023	17-51 33% £359,980	+29.44

Fergal O'Brien (19%) only scores 13% at Chepstow so measured against his national average he is -6%, a figure hard to recognise. He has 1 runner tomorrow in the 10yo TEQULLA BLAZE 3.32 to be ridden by Tom Broughton (5).

Rebecca Curtis (12%) has her horses running well and she is likely to be on the premises tomorrow. She has 4 runners including VALENS BRUYEE 1.40, ROUGE DE L'QUEST 2.15, THE BOOLA BOSS 2.50 & RIVER VOYAGE 4.40

JOCKEYS: Lorcan Williams (13%) rides 21% at Chepstow so +8% above his national average. He is the only jockey from our leader board with rides, they include ROUGE DE L'QUEST 2.15 & INEBRANLABLE 4.40. He rides 21% at the course and his figures over the past 30 days show 8-21 for 38% (-4.00) though 4-9 for 44% at the course this season.

OWNERS: None of the top 5 owners at Chepstow have a runner at the course tomorrow.

RED FLAG: TRH has nominated a Pacafi at this Chepstow meeting on ground expected to be soft. The 4yo KNIGHT OF ALLEN 12.40 is trained by Jane Williams and to be ridden by David Noonan. The trainer deemed her charge good enough to run in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham last November (22/1) on debut which was quite a big ask but he got carried out before the race truly began. He then confirmed the trainer's faith in his ability when when chasing home Liari at 11/4 when beaten only 3l in a Listed Race at Aintree on heavy ground priced 9/2 on heavy ground.

The form is substantial as Liari has now won 3 from 4 for Paul Nicholls and was the second favourite in the Fred Winter Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival last time out. Tomorrow the Pacafi runs in a Junior National Hunt Hurdle Class 4, so a huge drop in grade, the stable will be bitterly disappointed if their horse cannot win this before going on to better things! The trainer has confirmed an increased emphasis on young talent this year with around 70% of the yard's horses aged 4yo or younger and the Pacafi represents one of those! If Jane Williams is right this horse could be a grade horse.

Record times for Chepstow are very quick, which shows how slick it can be when the ground is fast, but horses can finish strung out like washing when it gets soft. Punters really must take note of conditions then, if they’re having a bet, because horses with stamina limitations can get home when the going is right for them, while it can be a real slog when it’s heavy. The other things to consider seriously are the undulations and the downhill run from the last. If you walk round the course, for example, you’ll be aware that, from several places out in the country, you can’t see the stands. The run-in, on the other hand, is quite steeply downhill, very quick on fast ground, and that’s why you often see horses make a mistake at the final jump - Mick Fitzgerald
