NATIONAL AVERAGE Please note the percentages in brackets, they are the national averages for each trainer, jockey or owner over the past 5 years. Comparing current form or course form against that of the national average is our preferred measuring tool, the math suggests a factual position, not one of bias. Besides, the higher the national average, with respect to the other trainers, the greater chance of success. The higher the trainer's success rate, the more likely the horse is to win. For example we look at the 3.10 Doncaster Maiden Stakes Race 6f (2yo) where 10 runners from 10 different trainers compete. We set aside the names of the horses for a moment and look at the trainer's national averages, they show: William Haggas 23%, Sir Mark Prescott 17%, Andrew Balding 15%, Ed Walker 14%, Eve Johnson-Houghton 12%, Mick Appleby 11%, Tim Easterby 10%, Bryan Smart 9%, Dominic Ffrench Davis 7%, and J R Jenkins 5%. Who would/could consider backing a 2yo juvenile trained by one who scores at less 11%? Of the 10 runners we can remove 5 of them as pretenders. The 1-2-3 of this race will come from the other 5 runners, from there we can search perceived win or place value or even exotics. It is our view the first three will come from 4 horses, they are HEBRIDES, KING ALFRED, OASIS GIFT and TARATARI. We will check the result at 3.20pm tomorrow... |
| JASON WEAVER - DONCASTER RACECOURSE
There are not many fairer courses than Doncaster, which is a lovely, virtually flat, galloping track. You do climb briefly, up and over Rose Hill, but, for the most part, it’s beautifully smooth to ride, a good, solid test of a horse. There can be one or two hard-luck stories, especially on the round course, when lots of runners are still in contention late on, and that’s where jockeyship comes in. I liked to be on the stands’ side on the straight course, but either side is fine, just as long as you’re not far off a rail. |
