RACECOURSE TEMPLATES explained
What is a NATIONAL AVERAGE?
How to PROFIT from the PACAFI

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE: It is a left-handed, undulating. An oval-shaped track, about two miles in extent, with a run-in of five furlongs. While not an out-and-out galloping course, owing to the pronounced undulations, the track puts the emphasis on stamina almost regardless of ground. All races up to a mile are run on the straight course.

FAVOURITES: The sample size is not big so beware a literal translation, but all numbers have value. Chepstow (Flat) is a good course for winning favourites. Over the past 5 years winning favourites score 146-401 for 36.41% (-13.29) so +4% above the national average. Winning favourites in handicaps show a small win to level stakes from a 34% strike rate, whilst winning favourites in non-handicaps show a small loss of -13.60 with a 43% strike rate!

TRAINERS: William Haggas (23%) saddled 3 winners on Wednesday, but we note this year he has been scoring at 20% which is -5% down on the 2021 & 2022 numbers. He shows 6-25 for 24% (-1.73) at Chepstow and has 2 runners at the course. They are expected to go close and include LORDSHIP 2.15 & ART HISTORIAN 2.50, both to be ridden by Adam Farragher who claims 3lbs, but he has not yet visited the winner's enclosure here from 6 rides.

JOCKEYS: The top UK jockeys are riding at York, Sandown and Goodwood, so we need to adjust our sights a little for this meeting regarding the jockey skill-sets. Chepstow is a stamina sapping course and riding the correct fractions is always problematic, but tomorrow they encounter small fields which will test their tactical acumen. We can confidently predict some will lose races they could/should have won!

There are two hot jockeys riding tomorrow in Thore Hammer Hansen (10%) who has 4 rides, and Trevor Whelan (8%) who has 3. There are two class jockeys in attendance with 2 rides each re Dane O'Neill (14%) and Pat Dobbs (12%). These four jockeys could be the angle in to the meeting, and it is reasonable to expect a couple of winners coming from this quartet and their 11 rides.

BY THE WAY & IN CONTEXT: Billy Loughnane (16%) visits Chepstow for the first time so 0 winners. Adam Farragher (13%) is 0-6 at the course for 0 winners. Meanwhile, Pat Dobbs (12%) has ridden 39 winners at Chepstow, whilst Dane O'Neill (14%) has ridden 63 - is this important? We think so...

OWNERS: Only one of our top owners at the course have runners tomorrow. The Cross Racing Club (10%) are 18% at Chepstow and have 2 entries on Friday in SOME NIGHTMARE 3.25 & ROMANOVICH 5.10, both trained by John O'Shea (8%) who is 13% at the course.

LORDSHIP (W Haggas) beaten favourite last time out, going the right way. Trainer 25% with horses running 10f+ and Adam Farragher (3) rides

3.25

DESERT FALCON (M Prescott) red-hot trainer, wind surgery, gelded then won next time out. Trainer 24% with handicap debutants and 24% in mid-season, Thore Hammer Hansen rides

RHUBARB (R Price) C&D winner, beaten favourite last time out, Dane O'Neill rides

4.35
MATTY TOO (E Dunlop) better than ever when making winning start for trainer at Yarmouth last week, 5lb penalty but Billy Loughnane (3) rides and mostly offsets it.
FIELDSMAN (A Carroll) C&D winner. 11yo who has raced 118 times for 12 wins and over £100,000 in prize money, weighted to win 67 > 60 but last win 14 runs ago, has a place chance. Mollie Phillips (3) rides

5.10
ROMANOVICH (J O'Shea) course winner, beaten favourite last time out, Confirmed previous promise when off the mark in first-time cheekpieces here (7f) on penultimate start in May. Darragh Keenan rides
KENSTONE (A Wintle) C&D winner, weighted to win 58 > 50, returns with yard amongst the winners, booking of Billy Loughnane is eye-catching from his much-reduced mark.
RED EVELYN (J Butler) formerly with Simon Pearce. 2 wins from 6 runs this year, good 2nd of 8 in Nottingham Handicap at Nottingham 9 days ago. Red-hot Thore Hammer Hansen rides

Chepstow takes a fair bit of getting. Because it’s so up hill and down dale, stamina has to come into play and it’s also worth noting that the straight is quite long, meaning that some horses start to race a lot earlier than is ideal. If you’re on one that wants to make the running, for example, you’ll often get a few keen to take you on earlier than you might like, so patience is vital for a jockey. Long-striding horses can often go well on the straight track but, as it’s quite stiff, they definitely need to get home - Jason Weaver
