The Racing Horse offers our Chepstow Racecourse Template for Monday 26 June 2023. There is a 7-race card containing 5 Handicaps, a Novice and a Maiden Race. The going is expected to be good to firm (watering).

Monday's meeting sees the start of National Stable Staff Week which recognises the work that goes on behind the scenes in horse racing. As part of the week’s activities, organised by Racing Welfare, twelve members of stable staff from across the country will be riding in a charity race at Chepstow on Monday 26th June. This fundraising event will take place before the official seven races which start from 2.10pm.

RACECOURSE TEMPLATES explained
What is a NATIONAL AVERAGE?
How to PROFIT from the PACAFI

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE: It is a left-handed, undulating. An oval-shaped track, about two miles in extent, with a run-in of five furlongs. While not an out-and-out galloping course, owing to the pronounced undulations, the track puts the emphasis on stamina almost regardless of ground. All races up to a mile are run on the straight course.

FAVOURITES: The sample size is not big so beware a literal translation, but all numbers have value. Chepstow (Flat) is a good course for winning favourites. Over the past 5 years winning favourites score 152-415 for 36.63% (-9.60) so +4% above the national average.

TRAINERS: Tony Carroll (10%) is leading trainer at Chepstow and he has 6 runners tomorrow. David Evans (11%) has 1 runner.

Nigel Tinkler (9%) travels 223 miles to Chepstow to bring 2 runners including GLORY HALLELUJAH 3.15 & UBETTABEQUICK 4.50 and that looks an interesting move given he is 0-3 at Chepstow over the past 5 years though he had scored 2 winners at the course before that! The suggestion is one of his two horses might be suited to the course and trip here, market watch is advised.

Similarly David O'Meara (12%) travels 212 miles with 3 runners, including  ZAKRAM 2.10, OWNERS DREAM 3.45 & AIHAWAI 4.50 all to be ridden by Jason Watson.

JOCKEYS: Only Gina Mangan (10%) from our leader board has rides for this meeting. She rides the course at 16% and has 2 rides including CORONATION COTTAGE 3.15 & BLUEBELL TIME 5.25. She rides the course particularly well scoring 14-86 for 16% (-16.89) so 6% above her national average.

The angle in to the meeting will surely feature the rides of Royal Ascot heroine Hollie Doyle (15%). She has a full book of 7 rides and will surely feature heavily, they include KHANGAI 2.10, POSTERGAL 2.45, ZING UP 3.15, AZAHARA PALACE 3.45, ATHENE'S KISS 4.15, CORAL REEF 4.50 & BERKSHIRE CRUZ 5.25

OWNERS: International Plywood Importers (19%) have an entry in ATTY'S EDGE 3.15 on Monday and this one is trained by local trainer Christopher Mason (12%) and to be ridden by William Cox (5%) who is currently 0-26.

BY THE WAY: It is interesting 4 horses have left Andrew Balding, 3 to Grace Harris and 1 to Adrian Wintle. Why would that be? The horses include POSTERGAL 2.45, WINNARETTA 4.15 & BERKSHIRE CRUZ 5.25 to Grace Harris and CLANDESTINELY 3.45 to Adrian Wintle.

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE - WHAT'S ON

Chepstow takes a fair bit of getting. Because it’s so up hill and down dale, stamina has to come into play and it’s also worth noting that the straight is quite long, meaning that some horses start to race a lot earlier than is ideal. If you’re on one that wants to make the running, for example, you’ll often get a few keen to take you on earlier than you might like, so patience is vital for a jockey. Long-striding horses can often go well on the straight track but, as it’s quite stiff, they definitely need to get home - Jason Weaver
