Taking RESPONSIBILITY for a wager!

RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible gambling is a concept that involves gambling for fun, and not as a source of income. Taking responsibility for a bet is something altogether different, especially in the context of our eBook and we hope to explain why.

Responsibility: something that is your job or duty to deal with.

We have long campaigned for individual bettors to take TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY for their own betting decisions, even if they are following a tipster. What does this actually mean? It means fully understanding the rules of the game!

For example, does the reader fully understand what an OVERROUND is? If the reader does not know what this term means they should not be betting seriously! The overround is the sum total of all the odds on the outcome of a single event. Odds offered by this term are seldom reflective of the true odds, because they factor-in a margin to make a profit irrespective of the result and to cover overheads. These overrounds can vary wildly between different companies at different times, so having a number of accounts is a prerequisite to securing best prices.

Understanding what an OVERROUND is, and the importance of betting with best price guaranteed bookmakers (if possible), should not need explaining - if it does the person should cease betting.

For those who do not have the time, confidence or know-how, one might seek an advisor or tipster, but any wager remains the absolute and total responsibility of the bettor. One cannot employ a tipster/advisor then relinquish responsibility for the wager. The onus is always on the individual to understand the modus operandi, strike rate and parameters in which the advisor is working to, and fully appreciate whether these components suit their particular risk versus reward mentality.

If you want your betting experience to be successful you need to behave like an investor and not a gambler. So, responsibility starts with a question. Do you want to make a second income or bet for fun and recreation? If it is for recreation then read no further.

Gambling and drinking are not conducive to professionalism or profit, and understanding the psychological factor behind peoples' proclivity to gamble when they have consumed alcohol is of paramount importance! Alcohol will affect behaviour, usually by losing a sense of perspective and/or ability to think rationally. Inhibitions/caution will decrease/disappear and one becomes less aware of the consequences of one's actions. Even those aware of the consequences are less likely to care about them and this is red-zone territory!

Academic research consistently finds that extensive use of alcohol is a significant factor in contributing to problem gambling, so much so that it is often used as a risk predictor. A study published in 2019 by affiliates of the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge, found that when individuals were gambling having consumed a moderate to excessive amount of alcohol, and they experienced losses, they chose to increase their bets in a way which resembled loss chasing. On the other hand, a focus group which had been given a placebo drink which was non-alcoholic did not differ in their bet sizes following losses.
It is clear, the subjects who were gambling having actually consumed alcohol were betting heavier and losing faster than their more sober counterparts.
  • Only gamble with money you can afford to lose, never borrow money to gamble with
  • Do not gamble when you are upset, depressed or when you have consumed alcohol
  • Do not chase your losses
  • Do not allow betting to compromise work or relationships
