The Racing Horse goes racing to one of our favourite racecourses in the UK on Wednesday when visiting Chepstow, the home of the richest race in Wales, the Coral Welsh Grand National.

Chepstow Racecourse is a located just north of the town of Chepstow in Monmouthshire, near the the southern end of the Wye Valley and close to the border with England. The picturesque Wye Valley provides a striking backdrop to 440 acres of historic parkland.

Superbly located between Bristol and Cardiff and close to the M4, M48 and M5 with excellent links to many parts of the UK. The racecourse shuttle bus operates from Chepstow Train Station to the Racecourse via the town's bus station. The service also operates from Newport Train Station direct to the Racecourse. Pay £1 each way from Chepstow, while those travelling from Newport pay £5 one way but get a free return by keeping their ticket and presenting it to the driver. The biggest race day in Wales sees Chepstow stage the fabulous Coral Welsh Grand National and this year takes places on Friday 27th December 2019. The course welcomes back international opera superstars Sir Bryn Terfel and Rebecca Evans, who will be singing the National Anthem as the runners circle at the start for the big race.

Tickets for this two enclosure meeting are now on sale and are £27pp for Grandstand & Paddock enclosure and £32pp for the Premier enclosure, these prices are in advance and on the day prices will be an additional £5 respectively. There is also a Pie & Pint package available in advance to get your day off to a great start, for just £36pp you will get your Grandstand & Paddock admission ticket, a top quality pie, drink (beer, glass of wine or soft drink) and a racecard.

Chepstow is one of three racecourses in Wales, the only course of the three to host Grade 1 jumps racing. That Grade 1 comes courtesy of the Finale Juvenile Hurdle, which can be used as a stepping stone towards the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Also at the December meeting is the Welsh Grand National, the biggest handicap of the year at the track. The highlights of the October Jumps Festival are the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle and the Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle.

Chepstow is a left-handed, undulating, oval course, nearly two miles around with eleven fences to a circuit, a five-furlong home straight, and a run-in of 250 yards. Conditions can be very testing. With five fences in the straight, the first part of which is downhill, front runners-or those leading as they field turns into the straight-do well here, though the obstacles don't claim anything like the proportion of casualties that might be expected.
