At Kempton it was a distinct disadvantage being out the back off the pace so the run must be upgraded and especially in the context of today's weak race. With that experience under his belt he must be very hard to beat this afternoon.Balding in form and Watson looks special!Andrew Balding has his horses in very good form, from his last 5 runners 3 have won and he is 4-8 for 50% with his 2yos at the course. The Pacafi is to be ridden by Jason Watson and he is the latest young star to emerge from Andrew Balding’s jockey academy at Kingsclere and has an excellent chance of becoming champion apprentice this year. He hopes to follow the example of Oisin Murphy, who also tore through his apprentice claim. Watson looks special and has a strike rate of 36% when riding winning favourites since the start of the 2013 season. When he combines with today's trainer they score 17-84 for 20% and not the statistics of an apprentice!The trainer sends two to Thirsk from Kingsclere, a trip of over 4 hours (260miles) so will be expecting at least one winner for his apprentice jockey but possibly two. Since 2003 the trainer records 8 winners from 41 runners for 20% (+0.91) at the course.Of his rivalsDr Smolder sets the standard off a mark of 64 returning to novice company after a poor handicap debut. A couple of these are less exposed including Bumbledom, a modest fourth over 7f here on his debut. Swerved and Set With The Stars looking best of the rest.TimeformThere was plenty to like about NEVER DO NOTHING's debut third at Kempton recently and he'll take a bit of stopping here if improving as expected. There was also a bit of promise from Bumbledom on debut and he could perhaps be the one to chase home Andrew Balding's charge.ValueThis looks a weak race and we believe that if Never Do Nothing runs to his Kempton form and not be as green early he must win! It is hard to be exact with perceived value but we would have taken the 4/7 and probably 8/15. Just need a good paddock, canter to the stalls and exit, on this occasion we do not fear a rival per se. |
