Pattern performer for sure

The beautifully bred Tempus made all for a comfortable victory at Wolverhampton last month and though the ground is an unknown factor should be capable of conceding 6lb to his main rival Lydon B. The Pacafi was made an odds on favourite over the extended mile last time and is expected to follow up under a penalty. There is little doubt who is the best horse in the race and who has the potential to make a pattern performer, he should be able to defy a penalty here. But, we are duty bound to look at the ground.

Ground preference

The sire Kingman was his sole race on soft to heavy when blitzing the Irish 2000 Guineas by 5l. The dam has won 2-3 on soft to heavy ground and the dam sire Dansili reveled in heavy ground. The record is mixed with his five half brothers and sisters from the dam side. Watching the run of Tempus at Wolverhampton his gait did not say must have fast ground so we are more than confident the colt will act on heavy.

Trainer & Jockey form

Roger Charlton has not been firing on all cylinders this season as his 13% strike rate proves but he is now beginning to find form. Jason Watson is beginning to settle into his new role and we expect this team to be effective or better than that from here. The trainer does well at Haydock and beats his national average showing 48-261 for 18%. Watson has started quietly for Charlton but that is down to the trainer and not the jockey nevertheless, figures of 5-58 for 9% is not exciting. There have been 8 second places and 11 third places in that total and one imagines that rankles. We did like his ride from the front on Tempus at Wolverhampton and expect him to get the fractions right to beat Harry Bentley on Lyndon B.

Of his rivals

Power Player has struggled in his two starts and would be a shock winner, even in these conditions. Lyndon B ran well in two starts on good to soft in October and showed he's trained on with a very good run at Doncaster.

Timeform 

TEMPUS has a superb pedigree and readily accounted for a reasonable field at Wolverhampton last time, so he should be able to defy a penalty for all that Lyndon B has made a promising start to his own career.

Value

Accepting a degree of uncertainty regarding the ground we must not get carried away but Tempus really looks like a 2/5 or even a 4/11 shot. The jockey will probably have a soft lead and just needs to get the fractions right. This is a very important ride for Jason Watson, he is not just expected to win, he is expected to look good in doing it!
