Newmarket July Course (Saturday)

Thursday's results not included...

COURSE: The July Course is 2m1f in extent with a right-handed bend at halfway, the first mile being part of the Cesarewitch course, the last the straight Bunbury mile. Notwithstanding the undulations for the first three quarters of a mile of the straight, the course then running downhill for a furlong before climbing to the line, it is galloping in character and favours big, long-striding sorts. As with the Rowley Mile course, ability to see out the trip thoroughly is essential.

FAVOURITES: Winning favourites at Newmarket (July) show 201-540 for 37.22% (-50.17) so around +5% above the national average. All six categories score at between 35% and 43%. Clearly this is a good racecourse for winning favourites.

TRAINERS: Charlie Appleby has a national average of 29% which is the largest in UK Racing yet he beats that strike rate at Newmarket on this July Course scoring at 34%. He has 4 runners for Friday including LOCAL DYNASTY & TAGABAWA 1.50, STAR OF MYSTERY 2.25 and EMPEROR'S STAR 4.10

J & T Gosden (21%) also have 4 runners and certain to be involved at the business end, they include OBELIX & BURGLAR 1.50, NASHWA & COPPICE 3.35 so doubling up in two races.

JOCKEYS: We have six top class jockeys riding at Newmarket tomorrow and the suggestion from here is they will dominate the meeting!

William Buick (23%) rides 29% at the course and has 6 rides. Hollie Doyle (15%) has 6 rides also and will be competing hard against our top jockeys, she might find a way to win. Ryan Moore (18%) has 4 rides whilst James Doyle (19%) has 5.

It is rare to see Jamie Spencer (13%) having 5 rides at a meeting these days and he makes it onto our hot jockey board, along with Neil Callan (15%) who also has 5 rides. Their rides should be filtered and processed.

OWNERS: Godolphin's (25%) winners at the course score more than the next 20 owners put together such is their dominance! Their national average in the UK is 25% yet score 76-247 for 31% and a profit to level stakes and SP of +2.53. They have 5 runners tomorrow, the 4 trained by Charlie Appleby and the other trained by Saeed bid Surror (20%) in LIVE YOUR DREAMS 3.00.

RED FLAG: Just a recap really but this current year Charlie Appleby has recorded 11-28 for 39% (-8.12) with his 2yos. Within those losers there are 4 second places and 5 third places meaning 20-28 for 71.43% has finished in the first three, highlighting the fact he has them firing. We remind members of his 2yo runners for Friday and Saturday, they are STAR OF MYSTERY 2.25 Newmarket, IMPRESSIVE ACT 2.50 Ascot, EMPEROR'S STAR 4.10 Newmarket and then on Saturday he runs RACE THE WIND 1.40 Newmarket and GREAT TRUTH 3.25 Newmarket. So 5 horses named and at least 2 winners if not 3?

With the longest straight in Britain and just one turn to negotiate in distance races, this is a lovely course to ride. Surprisingly, though, there are one or two ridges, even before the run down into the Dip, and you need to ride them smoothly. The other thing a jockey has to remember is that it’s a long way up that finishing hill - you’ll see plenty caught in the closing stages. Because of the chalk base, it can ride very lively, and the wind direction is vital. Getting cover is so, so important when it’s in your face - Jason Weaver
